The PC scene has become more and more vibrant over the years, and even Japan, where PC is a relatively unpopular platform, has begun to take notice. From making PC the lead platform for Dark Souls 2 to the recent ports of titles like Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Japanese devs are submitting to the whims of the master race opening up to new possibilites.

As it turns out, Square Enix may not be far behind.

It's a series whose heritage is on console, but according to Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase, that may change.

"Let's not forget, when we developed the Final Fantasy 13 series, all three titles, at the early stages of development we were working on PC," Kitase told Eurogamer.

"Then we had to port it to the consoles. As far as the technology is concerned, it would have been possible for us to make a PC version, but we decided against it for two reasons: we looked at the market situation and we didn't think it would be a good idea, and also it would have involved lots of complex issues like security. So we decided not to do it this time around.

"But we see potential in it and there are lots of regions and countries where PC is very strong. So in terms of our hope of being able to deliver our games to every single country in the world and to as many gamers as possible, yes, we would definitely be interested in pursuing that route in the future."

That's right. We might be going from Phoenix Downs to Phoenix Downloads!

...

Anyway, Square Enix has already made some moves on this front. They've recently provided PC ports of Final Fantasy VII and VIII, though these ports have not been without their fair share of bugbears. If Square Enix decides to move forward with this idea, let's hope they've learned a thing or twenty.

Looks like PC gamers' final fantasy may become, finally, reality.

Nice to hear! Some FF titles did get their PC releases about the same time as the PlayStation versions, but not the recent titles. Then again, pre-ps3 titles were a lot more interesting

"it would have involved lots of complex issues like security". Security for a singleplayer game? Or is this a fancy wording for "we wanted DRM"?

Security meaning DRM, they don't want their PC port "stolen". XD

Because their PC ports are usually half-assed, like the Steam releases? Hackers had to fix the audio with the PSX soundtracks since they were the same ones from 1998/1999, which is inexcusable. Why would anyone want to steal their inferior ports? LOL

I actually enjoyed the FF8 port back in the 98SE days... :< And the "HD remakes" of FF X and X-2 look completely half-assed. Even by console standards. They look like a PS2 game with a few added polygons and the sharpening tool abused in Photoshop.

The problem is that the re-released still used the shitty Midi versions from Win98, it's sad that modders have to do the work they don't want to do.

All they had were upscaled graphics and a generic achievement system, not much was different, and worse audio, but hackers fixed that.

Meh...I didn't like final fantasy back when it was good, so I doubt I'll be getting any future final fantasy game.

I'm not sure what those developers are saying, though. Are they saying consoles aren't what they used to be, or are they saying that PC got better since last time they checked?

In either case, it's good news for valve. Now all they have to do is lobby for it to become linux-exclusive.

I read that as "the consoles are basically PCs so all we have to do is press recompile".

That said I am not sure having a FF title on the PC is as great an honour as it once was.

So go from great console-only entries, to terrible shlock that they're doing as also-rans on the PC.

FF XIII was universally terrible, especially to anyone with the reading comprehension to understand even a basic plot. The fact that the game makes NO attempt to clear up any of its gaping plotholes other than through obtuse and concealed database logs and entries is absurd. Final Fantasy used to explain the story in a manner that also explained its game mechanics seamlessly. It seems that after going 3D, the quality of the story and gameplay fell apart. And the japanese eat it up so much as to assure the rest of the world gets hit with their awful titles.

Did they learn nothing from the scathing reviews, or the investor that literally sold ALL of his stock after seeing how awful their next attempt at an MMOG was?

That's why I stopped playing the FF series after FFX

FFXII was kinda good apart from a few character choices. The gameplay was fun in my opinion

I suppose, but, the newer Final Fantasy games just aren't that appealing to me, like, at all. I liked the series when Sakaguchi and Uematsu were part of SE, but that's just me.
