Longtime lurker here. I think I know the answer but can't find anything definite. If I missed it feel free to slap me a link.

Currently running sysNAND 4.4, EmuNAND 4.4(haven't played anything that needs more)
The 3DS has pretty much always been on my home Wireless so for ages it's had a nagging update notification. Probably started around OFW ~5.x
So my EmuNAND also is nagging for an update, as I'm looking to play an SDK 5.0 game I figure I'll have to update eventually. I'm on 2.0b1 and rather wait for 2.0 final.
I hear 7.1 doesn't update on 2.0b1 only b2.
If I get a game with 7.0(or 6.3) can I use it to update to that firmware?
My understanding is that the pending update is likely the latest 7.1 as the wifi is always on. And if I choose to update from any game it will just run the 7.1 already in the NAND's memory, is that correct?

Is there anyway to unwedge this pending update? If not I'll just stick with my older games and continue holding my breath on 2.0 multirom.

The 2.0b2 will allow you to update emuNAND to 7.x. then you can replace the 2.0b1 launcher and use emuNAND. Not sure about this and I haven't tried it yet. Look around though, others have said this works, though there will be some bugs or something.
Don't update your console with a game, it will most likely update the sysNAND.

I was able to update my 4.4 US on b1 to 7.1 emunand. But after that, I needed to go to b2 if I want to open settings or the eshop. So far, no issues with this upgrade. Has anyone done a similar upgrade to 7.1 on b1?

7.0+ on emunand doesn't work on SDK 5+ games. You can update from the settings like you're supposed to, but the SDK5+ games won't work.

Also, never update from the game card while in emunand, you'll update the 3ds system.

I don't need the eshop at the moment so maybe that's the way to go. I thought I read you put b2 on, update to 7.1 emunand and then put the launcher back to b1 and most things work except eshop and other things I don't care about.

Not sure anyone answered my main question though, maybe I provided too much detail.
If you leave wireless on, the latest update will download to the NAND(but not install), at that point there is no getting around it, if i approve any update it is going to use the 7.1 that is "pending" right?

Yes, it will update to latest update(7-----) if it downloads from internet.

If it's a game it'll use the update from the game.

Say you're on 4.4 and have the update downloaded but not installed. If you insert a game (like Luigi's Mansion) it will give the following message:

"A new update is required to play this game. Update to 4.5U?"

Hitting yes will install 4. 5 and not the update you have downloaded.

Great that answered my question and raised another. I saw above you said never to take a game cart update in emuNAND as it updates the sysNAND, does that apply for roms and retail carts?

I guess I pictured the emuNAND kind of like SNEEK on Wii, in that it is entirely virtual but i guess some functions can still reach the actual NAND even when in emuNAND, interesting.

It's what gateway says. I think it may be a precaution, since emuNAND is still somewhat buggy and you may be in the sysNAND without realizing it. It probably isn't and just to be on the safe side I wouldn't do it.
