This is a strange one, and I'm a bit confused.

To start with, I set my PAL WiiU to 480p using the component cable in the WiiU system menu. I then got the built in menu up on my TV to monitor the current video mode.

In WiiU mode, it displays at 480p.
When it boots into vWii, it instantly goes to 576i.
When I then load USBLoader GX, it switches to 480i.

If I use system default when launching a game, it launches it in 480i.
If I use disc default, it launches in 576i.
However if I force PAL480p, it simply loads in 480i.

I'm incredibly curious why it is doing this, especially considering this implies that the internal resolution vWii is running in when using 1080p and an HDMI cable isn't infact 480p and is actually 480i. (That would explain the horrible deinterlacing issues I get in some games.)
In addition, I'm planning on getting an XRGB-mini for various reasons, and I was hoping to supply it with a 480p feed over component for playing vWii games. If I can't get this to work then I'll have to leave my normal Wii plugged in as well, adding to the clutter.

So... Does anyone have any ideas of how to actually get vWii mode + USBGX running both themselves and games in 480p? I'm out of ideas, out of everything I've tried I've yet to get a 480p signal from the WiiU in vWii mode. As I said, I do get 480p in WiiU mode, so I know my TV happily supports it.

If anyone could give me some advice I'd really appreciate it, the quality (or lack thereof) is really getting at me!

Try using Settings Editor GUI v2.0. I just released it.

Sweet thanks, I'll give it a try.
Out of curiosity - How does it handle reboots and WiiU resolution changes? Do the settings stick, or are they volatile?

EDIT: Also a quick note, boot.dol is in the wrong folder in the download.

Nope, sadly it didn't work in the slightest. =[

It auto detects as 480i, although the app itsself runs in 576i.
If I manually set 480i, everything is 480i.
If I manually set 480p, everything is 480i.
If I manually set 576i, it acts like it normally does, changing between 576i and 480i depending on the application.

In addition, on 576i mode, USBLGX will run games at 480i if set to system, but 576i if set to disc. On 480i/p mode, it runs it at 480i regardless.

However, as before, I cannot get 480p to appear in any capacity no matter what I do when running vWii.
One thing though, when running at 1080p HDMI it auto-detected as 480p, so its possible that the upscaler is using that as the input. Still, I'd like to be able to get a clean 480 out from vWii...

It's essentially the same thing.

Thanks for the tip about the boot.dol file. I'll reupload it.

No problem, but what do you mean it's essentially the same thing?
The scaler built into the WiiU is incredibly grainy and noisy, so I'd much rather use the better one that I have.
However, to get the best image out of that I need a 480p feed from vWii over component.

Equally, I was curious about vWii's internal resolution when using the WiiU's scaler spesifically because I was getting some horrible interlacing issues. I think I've worked that out now though - I may have had SMG set to forced 480i when I noticed that. It seems to be behaving at present.

I haven't noticed any difference when playing a Wii game on a Wii through component cables (480p) or a Wii game through an HDMI cable (480p upscaled to 1080p). Your TV upscales it anyway.

Oh, there isn't much difference in that. It's possibly a bit more grainy on the WiiU's scaler, but you're right that TVs do just as much damage.
You would probably change your tune if you saw it through the XRGB-mini upscaled to 1080p though, it's incredibly crisp and not at all grainy. It's easy to do with a standard wii set to 480p, but for convenience I was hoping to have a method of forcing vWii to output the same.

I'm trying to tell you that it's not doing any damage. That's just what Wii games look like at 480p. Whatever you are talking about must also have anti-aliasing in it. Here's an example of the difference between upscaling and anti-aliasing.

I'm aware of that, but there aren't many analogue signal upscalers that use pure nearest-neighbour pixel doubling to give you the clean top style image. Almost all TV scalers cause some blurriness or distortion with a bicubic filter, and the WiiU one definitely adds graining.
The mini however can produce results like the top, but it needs the clean unaltered 480p signal to do so. It can do it with an interlaced signal, but the results are never as good due to how horrible deinterlacing is.

With the proper equiptment, the 480p feed from the vWii should look almost indistinguishable from the same game emulated with "correct" 480p settings on Dolphin. Obviously you can increase the internal resolution with Dolphin, but that's defeating the object here.

My point is that you seem to think Wii games look nice at 480p with component cables, which isn't even a little bit true. The jaggies are awful.

oh god the jaggies are horrible, I'm not arguing that. However, there is a lot of improvement that can be made with regards to graininess and bluriness by properly processing the signal, which I never implied had anything to do with the aliasing.

Just my opinion, but I get a much better picture in Vwii when I set the Wii-u to 480p (on HDMI), and let my TV scaler bring it to 1080p.
If I let the Wii-u do the scaling, the picture is softer and, (depending on the game) borderd by a thin black box on all sides.

I dont have any issues with the signal reverting to 480i. Although, I'm on a NTSC Wii-u.

I start it from HBC, sets all options, then save and exit. No shift in video mode and still 1080p. Am I doing it wrong?

This is on vWii on a Wii U with 5.0 FW...

It's still upscaled to 1080p. The difference is in the native resolution.

I only used the Settings Editor GUI for the apps folder on my SD. Do I also need the ploader for quickload to work? Where is the quickload button? Sorry, but I really would like for this to work.

Yes, copy the ploader folder too. That has the theme (you can get more from using postLoader) and the present.cfg file, which you edit for quickloading. Instructions are available here:
