Hacking HDD is Clicking not sure how to fix

So I took the dive and installed HBC on my Wii U, got everything working EXCEPT...
My HDD won't work. I have a Y Cable for it and every thing but I'm not sure how to supply the little thing with power since I know the Wii U USB ports have low power.
It's a 120gb Storite USB HDD. I made sure I plugged it into the upper back USB port as well. So far I've used it with Wii Flow, USB Loader GX and CFG USB Loader and it's hasn't worked. I've also tried formatting it as a WBFS drive for all Loaders and as a FAT 32 with a WBFS folder.

Usually, when a hdd makes a constant clicking noise when powered on, it's dead. The possible fixes are an exchange on warranty or just buying a new one.
If you want to do a last test, plug it on a computer.

i know its crazy to ask but you only mention plugging it in the top slot did you plug the 2nd usb in the bottom to add the extra power to the drive?

Needs more power to get running, make sure to plug in both USB plugs, or failing that, try some other USB cables, that sometimes helps.

[edit] Also you could try a powered USB hub.

This sounds like imminent hard drive failure. You should try to plug it into a computer, and if by any chance that it can be detected, then you should run a SMART check software like Hard Disk Sentinel and it should tell you the status of your hard drive.

Its working perfectly fine now, It just didnt like the order I had the USB cables plugged in

Also, you should make sure you don't plug it in until you're in Wii Mode. At least on the one I use, once the WiiU has detected it and asked for permission to format it for idiotic reasons (permission: DENIED) I find I can't use it any more until I power cycle it.

the same thing happened to me, but started working in a different port. The drive works fine when it does, but randomly clicks off. It never does that on my original Wii or when plugged into my laptop

HDD clicking is also often caused by the case screws not really screwed in tightly enough:



Screws get loose over time all on their own accord due to hard drive vibration as it spins the disks and although it sounds mad, with the right tools sometimes you can revive those "clicking and not responding" ones. "Imminent Hard Drive Failure" sounds harsh when the problem might actually be minor.

Try buying a Y-USB cable.

The Wii U's USB ports do not give enough power to the HDD drive, unlike the Wii ports that could power it without any additional port.

I had the same issue with my HDD, bought a Y-cable with a Female-Female connector to plug the cable and the HDD in both ends, and now is working without an issue.

OP already is using a y-cable and also already reported back, he just used the wrong usb slot for the actual data cable and it is working now

For the Wii U, and if it's not powered by an AC adapter, yes, otherwise you won't get enough power from one port.

Never remove the cover on a hard drive.....

A single particle of dust an errant hair a random skin flake would destroy a hard drive.

I have seen people take the cover off a hard drive and run it, they usually run for a few minutes before errors start to pop in in Windows, another couple of minutes and the drive will never boot up again. The air inside the drive (from a factory sealed drive.) is completely clean and in some cases they use helium.

Still the demonstration about the screws pulling the heads out of alignment seems like an interesting idea... I doubt vibration could un-torque the screws but I will keep it in mind when I get a drive and it is doing the click of death. (Could be why the freezer trick works sometimes.)

Try plugging it on a PC. If it makes the same noise, it is time to ditch the drive.

I Had clicking on my HDD but all i done was plugged both usbs in the back and it stopped clicking
