I would like some input on this dilemma....

I modded my friend's wii a long time ago. Warned him about updating and it seems he decided to update one random day he told me. Games don't load anymore, this may or may not correlate since I don't have the whole story.

Anyway the HBC was missing and he was on 4.3. I used ModMii to rehack his system. Reinstalled HBC, preloader, Bootmii as boot2 and made a backup of his nand, etc etc etc. Burned or official games still don't load. VC games also do not load (retro games ie Nintendo 64 games however DO load). USB configurable loader also does not load games....

I downgraded to 4.1 and put his settings EXACTLY like my system, and still no luck. Absolutely nothing loads except N64 games (I assume SNES probably works fine too?). VC, usd hdd, or official games DO NOT WORK. Used syscheck on Modmii and everything is up to date. I used a compress air can to spray inside, made a make shift lens cleaner with a disc and microfiber cloth to insert in an attempt to clean the lens....no luck. I can't figure out the problem....

I would like to know what can the possible problem be before I suggest to him to buy parts for replacement. Is this a software or hardware issue? Even if the lens or dvd drive motor was burned out, how would that effect VC games or backups on a hard drive from loading? If I could get back ups loading, that would be more than fine but I can't even get that to work! As I stated before, Modmii reports everything up to date and the settings are identical to my system.

STUMPED! Any input would be GREATLY appreciated....

Edit: I should also mention when putting in a disc, it doesn't make any noise. As if it isn't trying to load the disc

Man, that syscheck look pretty normal to me.
Original retail games should run fine from the disk channel unless there's something wrong with the drive (and if there's something wrong with the drive, the disk channel should show an error instead of showing the game banner after the spinning disk)

A DVD-R backup will NOT work from the disk channel the way you have it set up (if that's what you're trying out here) but IF the drive is old enough to be able to read them, it should at least work from a backup loader.

I see no reason why a backup loader shouldn't be able to run them off of a hard drive unless it's settings are messed up like telling it to use a cIOS that doesn't exist or something (if the same games that work on your Wii don't work when you just passing the HDD and SD card over from one console to the other, I don't really know what to tell you.) Even a broken drive shouldn't have anything to do with USB/SD backup loading, I would think, but I could be wrong.

Sounds as if the dvd drive is dead, once a dvd drive goes the Wii will no longer run any discs or anything from USB. I'm not sure why VC isn't loading but I have come across Wiis with burnt out DVD drives and none would run any game from SD/USB/Disc.

Thanks for the input guys, just wanted to make sure I didn't do something wrong with settings. the drive doesn't even sound like it's attempting to read so it's most likely bad.

So my next question is how easy is swapping a drive? Is it as easy as just replacing? I know some systems "marry" them to the board (ps3 I believe??). Is there anything more to it? I've opened up my console way back when to install a wiikey before softmods so I am confident I can open and swap out the drive if that's all there is to it

You can just buy one and put it in no worries, only plugs too no soldering.

Thanks, I'll check eBay and see if I can get a cheap one. It doesn't sound like it starts up, would just getting the motor and spindle assembly be a fix or should I just get an entire drive?
