The reasonable me whispers that it's an impossibility anyways, since if we have infinite numbers, the "summing up" process never really stops... Moreover, if we're not substracting anything, how come we end up with a result lower than zero? How bizzare - maybe this is just some odd exception. After all, the moment you take "an average" of anything, accuracy suffers.

I would REALLY like to know why you end up with a negative number. They keep saying it's an amazing result but they should just try to explain that part more.

Apparently the summation of one to infinity is a diverging series because it will never approach a specific value, so it can't be solved using normal means. There's various methods to solve them and I'm not even sure whether all of them always give the same value - I ASSUME they do, but really I don't know. And I can't even read the Wikipedia article on diverging series without getting a near headache, so I'll believe it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divergent_series
On the other hand typical summations from 1 to m can be rewritten using the formula (1/2) * m * (m + 1) where m is the upper bound. Plugging infinity into there gives (1/2) * infinity * (infinity + 1) which equals infinity... so yeah, fuck maths.
