Hacking So is it possible to play Pokemon X/Y retail without updating my 3DS?

It's emulated nand. Look it up for detailed information.

BUT... here's the important bit. Once you played X/Y on a 4.5 3ds, the game saves would not be readable on a >4.5 device and vice versa.

So... if in the future nintendo somehow blocks emunand or forces update or something, you would lose your precious game progress.

yes. that means you still have to keep a nonmodded >6.x 3ds to be used exclusively with poke X.

As long as you use emuNAND on both it should be fine. EmuNAND saves work with any emuNAND, 6.0+ OFW works with any 6.0+ OFW. There is the save backup protection, but I don't think that will cause issues.
