I got the Last of Us for Christmas and I just beat the game today and my thought upon completion was simply, "that was okay I guess". The game had a decent story, a sense of completion, a satisfying ending that can be interpreted in different ways and the graphics were what I'd expect in a PS3 game that was released as late as it was.

But aside from those things the game really didn't deserve the amount of hype it received. The story like I just said was decent but it wasn't as amazing as everyone claimed it was. I didn't grow attached to anyone except Joel and Ellie or really feel any sort of emotion towards anyone else. When people got out of things safely I didn't care and when people died I didn't care. The game just didn't give me enough time with any of the supporting characters for me to grow an attachment.

With the storyaside I'll turn to my main gripe. The gameplay. The game had a sense of progression with upgrades and gave a small sense of survival with the crafting but even when I'd use as much weapons and explosives as I could against the enemies I'd still have more to use. The game tried to tell me that resources were hard to come by but they weren't. Eventually that small sense of survival turned into me going guns blazing against everything because I knew that "there's plenty more where that came from". Also, the combat and puzzles were the exact same all the time with a few things thrown in between to try and make it feel like new things were being added, things like being able to ride a horse. The game tried to mix stealth with action but in every instance I was able to pick action and get the level done with faster. I just don't understand what is 10/10 or 9.5/10 about any of this.

I'm going to end the rant/mini review here. I didn't even intend for this to drag this long but anyways back to the title. Did anyone else think The Last of Us was good but not as amazing as thousands of people made it out to be?

Lame. Not horrible, or anything, but meh... Stealth is weak, even Hitman Absolution had stealth better then that, and that game was arguable. And aiming seemed to be busted and stiff in some way. Uncharted was okay in that perspective, but somebody have broken something up.
And plot wasn't intresting enought to make me tolerate all this.
Fanboys will still love it. Man, they were obssesed even before game was released (with fun-made movie and all), so nobody is gonna listen to reason anyway. Posers.

FANTASTIC game... one of the generation's best easily, and definitely the best PS3 exclusive ever for me (up to now of course!) If anyone played through it on Easy by the way, shame on you, that's just not the same experience!

Still, like the other recent 'Mario 3D World is shite' thread, personal opinion and all that! Remember folks, just because you don't like xxx game doesn't mean to say the next person is a feckin eejit for loving it...;)

For me though, I can't decide whether this or SM3DWorld was my Game of the Year, and what a year 2013 was for games! That's just my opinion of course!

This sounds like a matter of difficulty mode more than anything else. Were you playing on Hard?

If not, there you go.

But this guy have some points. About the plot, and drawbacks from uncharted games, he was right for sure.
No, he does not.
For starters, the first 45 seconds is irrelevant. The game isn't that similar to The Walking Dead. Only thing they have in common is the zombies but can we really call the infected (runners) in The Last Of Us zombies?
There isn't much gameplay in the game?
Sure it's just like Uncharted when it comes to ladders but most of the fun in The Last Of Us comes from fighting Clickers, Bloaters, and the bandits.
Didn't bother watching the last half of that nonsense.

I haven't beaten it yet due to not having time. But I think it's been pretty good so far. I haven't played any of the uncharted games so I don't have anything similar to base a comparison on. But it's an entertaining game in a familiar setting, with a plot that's sort of predictable.

I think the problem with games is that they get so hyped and then some people go into it with these enormous expectations already built up and then they find one or 2 things hey don't enjoy and it drops their experience down a lot more than it should. I found this true for me and Ni No Kuni, I was really excited and then the battle system and pacing turned me off. I only got a little into it, and I hope to finish it soon, but the hype hurt it for me.

As someone noted the SM3DW thread that was going on, that game is facing a similar situation. It's a Mario game along the same vein as proper 2D plat forming Mario. To me it doesn't have anything too crazy like some of its predecessors, nor does it really make me want to explore each level or replay them more than the needed times, which hasn't been more than once through. Although for some reason it's gotten such great, even amazing reviews, I really can't see how people honestly called it game of the year material. Good for what it is but not life changing.

Apologies for going all over the place. Early morning for me.

Is it the cool thing to hate great games?
It's always been the cool thing! Especially when it's a format exclusive like this/Mario 3D World.

....I can't say much, I've bred one: my eldest won't touch The Last Of Us, or Mario... won't even look at them, 'theyre just shit!' Bought him a powerful PC see, and he's part of 'the Master Race' - any console only game is now crap!

And you can qualify that... how? If you haven't played the game itself, you can't really "know" if he's right one way or the other.

Dunkey can be hysterical, but just because he makes fun of a game doesn't make it bad. That's like saying a game is bad only because Yahtzee criticized it.

I played it for maybe an hour and stopped. Didn't like it. But then again I don't play shooters, I prefer platformers and games that feel more retro. So my opinion isn't one most people will care about.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
