hello GBAtemp, just yesterday I bought a 3DS (US/asia) with 4.2 firmware and a gateway flashcart, I'm still noob in 3ds homebrew scene, so here are some of my questions:

1. can I stil play cartridge from other regions without updating my firmware? I read that some games will force 3ds to be updated, so is there any particular games that I must avoid if I want to keep my exploit?

2. can I still access eshop and buy games there without updating my firmware? I specifically want to buy shin megami tensei IV and ace attorney along with their dlc.

3. I still don't get about sysnand/emunand. how do I use emunand after installing gateway exploit? (launcher.dat?)

4. is there any video game console emulator for 3DS you can recommend?

thank you and regards

1. The only way to play retail cartridges on Gateway FW is through Classic mode. This supposedly doesn't allow for region-free, so no.

2. You don't update your NAND firmware, but your emuNAND firmware does need updated in order to access the eShop. I believe that the latest Gateway allows you to access eShop on the latest 7.xx firmware. However, I believe I read somewhere that the emuNand currently can't handle certain games from the eShop. Perhaps somebody can clarify this for me.

3. Sysnand is your system's default firmware. It' never going to be updated so the exploit is forever there. How emunand is accessed after installing the exploit (with the blue card) is every time you want to access emuNand, you go to your settings, other, then go to the DS profile information while holding L. This launches the Gateway menu, which lets you launch into gateway/classic mode. Both are emuNAND based.

4. Do you mean emulators that are run on the 3DS? There are none, as unsigned code isn't being run for things such as emulation yet. However, I believe that if you run the blue gateway card (which is a DS flash cart), I believe any DS homebrew could be run. Any emulators available for it could be run in DS mode (none of which have a lot of resources, so won't be too reliable). Bear in mind, every time you boot into DS mode, you will have to rerun the gateway exploit after you finish with DS mode.

first question yes you can play any region game the card is region free. 3ds rom files only
second question I believe the eshop is closed at the moment but not 100% sure.
third question systnand is the main setup the 3ds came with. the emunand is a clone of the original that you can update to the latest firmware. make sure your in the gateway emunand the way to tell is go to settings and look for the firmware it should look like this gw3d 4.2.0-9u or something like that don't leave to main screen stay in there and go to internet and set up the network then go over to update firmware like you would in the main nand.
forth question none that I know of

thank you for your explanations. I see that my firmware is 4.2.0-9u after installing the exploit. I will try to update the firmware then and see if it works.

so basically it's safe to update the firmware as long as it's emunand right, but don't ever update when it's running sysnand or I will risk losing my exploit? also, if I turn off the machine after updating the firmware (in emunand), do I need to repeat the step again? (installing the exploit, entering emunand, updating firmware, accessing eshop, etc). so does it mean, I should only play 3DS cartridge in emunand classic mode (if I want to play games that force the 3DS to update, let's say, pokemon x/y? super mario 3D?)

make sure you only in the gw3d 4.2.0-9u when you update cause if you leave out to the main screen and you see you were in gw3d when you leave to the main screen it reverts back to the main 4.2.0-9u and then you will be updating the main firmware. so becareful make sure when you go into settings it has gw3d before the firmware and proceed to internet and setup network settings. then back out of the network settings after the network is working and go into update firmware.

This video literally explains everything about gateway. Watch it, learn it, live it.

another question. do I need US credit card to buy games from US eshop store? I currently live in New Zealand and have a NZ visa debit card (my country of residence is indonesia though), from what I read, it seems indonesian users cannot buy games from US store because it's not listed in the country list (sigh). the nearest one is singapore, and from what some users said, the collections are not as complete as US eshop.

I must have missed something. I have installed the gateway, and keep holding L when clicking DS profile, it rebooted normally (and I can play 3DS roms), is this emunand mode you were talking about?
