Merry christmas ‘temp! A tiny amount of you might remember me from the past few Dutch Pokémon translations a while back. Well, today I’m back to give you something that has been on my computer catching dust for ages; the Dutch translation of The World Ends With You! Back in August of 2011 I contacted the people who worked on the Spanish translation of The World Ends With You, and thanks to their extraction tools this translation was made possible.

Over the past years I translated small parts of the game whenever I felt like it, which resulted in a fully translated story script somewhere in 2012. Since then I haven’t touched it anymore. It’s actually up to you guys if you guys want me to continue it or not.

So what’s the deal of me translating it to Dutch? Well first of all, I just love having things in my own language. I think it’s a shame almost no game has had a proper translation in our language, if any at all. I wanted to prove that a great JRPG like this one could be in fact translated in our language without making it sound awkward. Or at least, that’s what I tried. Aside of that, the game had plenty of proverbs and (mathematical) terms people would normally not understand if they aren’t native English speakers. There were like A LOT, and I had to look each one of them up before I knew what they meant.

So it’s up to you guys. Try it out for yourself and see if you like it. Do you want me to finish it, or should I leave it? If you’ve never played this game before, this is the perfect opportunity! I played it and think it’s one of the best games in the DS library.

Be aware that there could still be some grammatical errors etc. in it. Please note that I did this all on my own without proofreaders or spelling checkers.

On a normal day at broad daylight a boy named Neku suddenly awakes at a scramble crossing in Shibuya. Not knowing what happened he feels in his pockets and notices a pin with a skull on it. As he tries out the pin, he starts hearing voices in his head; the thoughts of the people around him. Could there be a connection between the pin and the voices he hears? At that moment he receives a somewhat vague text message on his cellphone demanding him to reach a building named 104 (pronounced as Ten-Four). Not taking the message seriously, he deletes the message. Unable to do so, he suddenly feels something in his hand. It's a timer.

As the timer appears in his hand, as do a number of frogs. They are in a bad mood and start attacking Neku without notice. When Neku finds himself helpless he shouts for help, but the people around him seem to ignore him. He sees the people being attacked vanishing, so he tries to get away from the frogs when all of a sudden he meets a girl. The first thing she did was asking Neku to form a pact with him. Neku agreed, not knowing what her 'deal' is, and he receives some pins from her. These weren't just normal pins, but psychs, usable in combat. The next moment he is engaged in battle against the frogs that suddenly started attacking him.

Neku and the girl succeeded in defeating them, and they introduced themselves to each other. The girls name was Shiki. Neku, being a little antisocial towards other people, immediately turns away and asks her to leave him alone and he walks away. Shiki follows him and tells him that they are stuck with each other for the rest of the week, and that they're trapped Shibuya. Where Neku at first didn't believe her words, he does when he runs into an invisible wall. They are literally trapped in Shibuya. What's next, some garbage collecting mathematical freak? And thus the Reapers' Game begins...

Huh, neat. One question though, mostly out of curiousity: how did you translate "So zetta slow"? IMO using the word zetta in Dutch sounds kind of weird.

Huh, neat. One question though, mostly out of curiousity: how did you translate "So zetta slow"? IMO using the word zetta in Dutch sounds kind of weird.

I think I just translated it as "Zo zetta sloom!", to make it sound close to the English variant. But you're right, using the word might sound a little awkward at some times. Maybe it's just something to get used to.

I'm always open for suggestions, though.

I was asking mostly because I couldn't come up with anything better myself, so no suggestions here. You could use a different prefix, but anything under tera is too well known, so that just leaves peta, exa and yotta, and none of them are much better than zetta.

I was asking mostly because I couldn't come up with anything better myself, so no suggestions here. You could use a different prefix, but anything under tera is too well known, so that just leaves peta, exa and yotta, and none of them are much better than zetta.
If anything suitable comes to my mind I'll use it. I'd like to keep the game's nature, so I wouldn't really like the idea of replacing the word to something 'standard' either.

Also, I noticed some weird phrasing in the current translation. Will be fixed in the next version, if there is enough interest, of course.

I know, that's why I mentioned those three words. They are literally the only suitable alternatives I would even consider myself. Roughly the same meaning, obscure science words (that are strictly speaking not even words :P). Anyway, good luck with this and all. I won't try it myself, mostly because I usually prefer English localizations, but I'm sure there's someone out there who loves you for doing this (they might just not have realized it yet).
