PSN has been spotty all day, IOS stuff has been spotty and eShop has been down for most of all day. Wait til either late tonight or tomorrow to get on the eShop. It's just too many people accessing the service.

Or maybe Idk, problems about the servers in general that are totally out of their hands and trying to fix it?

Servers don't have problems by coincidence on Christmas morning, they likely have been DDoS-ed by thousand of kids (and grown ups too) from every angle of Earth trying to access the eShop at the same time. Someone failed to predict this and dimension the servers accordingly.

Oh, so you buy a physical package which gives you the download code for the game; am I understanding this right? If that's the case, then why didn't they just package the card in the physical case? That way, they would've had the game: and all they'd needed to do was register the game with their NNID.

You buy a plain 3DS with nothing bundled and simply expect to open its "appstore" and download software for it using a credit card or prepaid scratch cards. That's the most common situation, I suppose.

I get to repeat something I said a while back: either a network is ready or it isn't ready. And even then, there is still an unpredictability factor present in this scenario. Something might be ready, but then unexpectedly crashes.

Sounds... stupid. And you're complaining that the network is down because thousands of people bought a 3DS and went onto the eShop to download the game from the app store?

As I said, I'm aware no service has an infinite uptime. Sony, Apple, Steam and others have had their good share of problems.

Still, being down ALL DAY is not that common..

What's stupid about it? Smartphone and tablets have gone fully digital. Services are not expected to be down all day. A service that Nintendo advertise, not some obscure feature. People have every right to rely on it.

Hmm PSN does have it problems all day too even since yesterday, Steam was some days ago almost a whole day offline.By the way Nintendo did some maintance on the servers thats at least what the site you posted says ;).
Anyway it sucks but it just happens from time to time and i dont know why there needs to be argued about that at all.

Haha, you said expected. :) You can't guarantee something to work 100% of the time. You can rely on PineSol to work, but the makers feature a 99.9% chance it will do its job. That leaves .1% that could fail. Yes, this .1% concept is important.

I'm ok with the "anything can fail" idea.

I have problem with all the digital download hate or skepticism or "what's this NEW thing kids do, back in my day.." that emerges in this kind of threads.

It's 2014 no need to act all "old school" any time buying digital is mentioned and act "that's stoopid, joke's on digital fools" if nintendo fails to deliver digital games on Christmas. On steam or sony (no problem on apple side this year apparently) forums there may be similar threads, here it's about nintendo.

Not the end of the world, we're not doomed, just wanted to talk about the issue with other tempers who have been trying all day to download a game from the eShop.

So the point of this thread is to argue:

-Nintendo set up a global server outage to happen conveniently on Christmas Day.
-It had nothing to do with thousands of new owners trying to update their new Wii U/3DS consoles and download games at the same time.
-Iwata is Satan.

I like how people complain about Nintendo specifically when Steam has been absolute hell yesterday.
Yup. Steam was completely unusable because of -118 errors yesterday for at least several hours and the PSN store froze on me at least five times in a row. Also, the browser based PSN store was down completely.

Day 2, lunch time in Europe

eShop still down (love how I got 4 different error codes during the outage, maybe it's some kind of Layton-style mini game to figure out)

Have other services (sony, steam, apple, microsoft) been completely down for 36hrs STRAIGHT?

Oh and btw, because of the eshop downtown and large influx of japanese player using the app, pokémon bank has now been delayed. (Connection issues and server issues.)
Unacceptable, their pulling another flipnote.

Yep. It's down.
Also, it's on US eShop with TBD release.

Instead of thinking they destroyed Christmas, why not think that Christmas destroyed their servers :P

It seems like the op is a spoiled kid who can't wait a couple of days to be able to receive his gift.

Am I the only one who cares more about spending time with my family than playing video games on christmas? By the way, I didn't receive the Zelda albw game I pre-ordered in time for xmas and I'm not crying or whining about it...
