Hacking GW Firmware 1.0 -> update to 4.5

A few people on GBA has claimed that by using Luigi's Mansion 2 and GW firmware 1.0, it will allow the user to update the 3DS to 4.5 and circumvent having to buy a retail game.

Now if this is true, where can I go to find that GW 1.0 firmware? It's no longer on GW's website. Looks like I will need someone to upload it for me.

I just realized that it is impossible to go from lets say 2.2 to 4.X via game ROM because the Gateway launcher wont even open. Is that correct? ​

Since the files are apparently considered illegal, GBAtemp and Filetrip users must refrain from:
1) uploading or re-uploading Gateway 3DS files to Filetrip or GBAtemp
2) linking to such files from Filetrip or from GBAtemp (this includes posts, shoutbox, and every other place).

I updated from 4.2 to 4.5 trough a ROM, everything is working perfectly.

I can confirm this as I just did it myself. When you run the game it tells you exactly what firmware number it's trying to update to before you accept it so even if you have a rom with the wrong firmware, you can cancel it and find another one. Not an easy mistake to make though if you just Google for a list of 4.5 roms.

Thats correct; the only way to update via ROM is having at least a 4.1 FW.
