I picked up the Tearaway bundle for €150. It doesn't have a memory card included, so I ordered a 32 GB one, but it will be delayed till it's here because apparently it's sold out and will be re-stocked in 3 days. Which means no games for me.

First thing I noticed is that the screen doesn't look that different from a PSP Go in terms of crispnes though the colors seem to be a bit too saturated. Second, you can't use your 3DS touch pen on the Vita, because it won't work. You are forced to smear your shiny new display with your nasty fingers. You can later enable button controls as those are disabled by default. The introduction music was annoying, the Vita is supposed to be a console for core gamers, not for happy-life-is-good families for god's sake. The UI is definitely not a PSP and I had trouble figuring out how to exit the tutorial app.

The analog sticks felt a bit short which perhaps means you won't have much accuracy with them. No issues with dpad (which this time is a real dpad and not four separate buttons) and face buttons. The rear touchpad is a no go. It's literally impossible to hold the Vita comfortably without your fingers touching the rear end all the time. You have to use a grip. The select and start buttons are too small. They look a lot smaller in real person.

Again about the OLED screen. The colors seem to be a bit too saturated, especially reddish colors. Sadly there is no way to adjust the color intensity. Still, it's a pretty awesome screen. Apparently Sony uses another touch screen technology than Nintendo as the surface of the screen is darn hard without any visible layer covering the screen as you know it from the DS/3DS. This is perhaps the reason why my touch pen didn't work.

Overall the Vita feels like a pretty sweet device with obvious issues (that are partially fixed with the Vita 2000). Nonetheless I am keen to play with it more (once I get my memory card ).

Vita uses capacitive touchscreen, commonly found in tablets and smartphone. It measures capacitance, ability to store electrical charge. Human body can conduct electricity.

3DS and DS use resistive touchscreen instead. Resistive touchscreen measures pressure to determine touching. They are cheaper and accurate but more prone to scratching.

Two different touchscreen with two different working principle. You'll need a stylus that is designed for tablets to use it with Vita.

The only issue with original VIta is really the Start and Select buttons. You'll grow accustomed to holding Vita without touching the rear pad.

Hahaha... nope. I should be able to hold it the way I want.

I *never* held my PSP like that. Honestly, it is pathetic, that not only Sony implemented such a pointless gimmick, but a gimmick that forces everyone to hold the system in such a way that makes the gimmick work as intended. How awfully generous of us. You're welcome, Sony!

You must absolutely despise the 3DS with standards like that.

Because all 5% of games that actually use the rear touchpad make it such a painful feature...right.
It's a dumb pointless gimmick, but it can be either turned off or by default no games actually use it.
It's like complaining about the 3DS' 3D...it's not something that is forced on you, so why bitch other than to look like a moron?
The only time you actually need the rear touch really is for games focused around it, and they all suck.

Also I honestly wonder how you guys actually hold the vita, since naturally my hands never actually interfered with the touchpad. My hands ain't small either. It's not a tiny system like the PSP, there's plenty of room.

I wasn't saying otherwise.. if you look above, I was replying to "You'll grow accustomed to holding Vita without touching the rear pad."

I am sorry, but I was not aware that the gimmick can be turned off. Not sure if I can believe this however.

PSP doesn't have rear touchpad.. so it has way more room than Vita.

the amount of surface area of a Vita 1000 you're allowed to hold, versus a PSP:

and even if Vita had no rear touch... PSP is not even that much smaller than it.. so what the hell.

With enough game time, you'll get used to the rear touch pad, trust me. I hated it at first but now its fine although it does give me slight cramps for extended hours of game play lol
For those saying the rear touch pad is a gimmick, its actually really damn useful for Ps1 classics and Ps4 remote play with the L2/R2 and L3/R3 mapped to 4 quadrants of the pad.

WiiUBricker, if you had waited a bit longer you would have gotten tearaway and little big planet with a 16gb memory card for £150 from amazon, i just brought this yesterday, it's normally priced at £225 so it was a steal imo.

the rear touch screen problem is a concern because i can get cramps in my hands if i hold a device in a awkward way for long periods, the vita 2000 model supposed to have fixed this problem but the the vita 2000 model has so many other negatives that it's not worth it in the long run anyway, that is why i have decided to buy the older version of the vita instead of the redesign.

Ha! Today I bought a grip from GameStop because of the back touchpad. Now my Vita can't fit in its original case...
Any recommendations?

Damnit! And it's actually a 3G model! Well, at least a physical copy of Tearaway was included in the first bundle.

There are capacative syluses out there, those will work on a Vita. Alternatively you can use any metal object or organic material as a stylus, including a banana.

My main problem with the rear touchpad is that it sometimes interferes with it being optional. For example, I was playing Terraria and I unknowingly had my finger on the touchpad so when I tried manual cursor it would be a bit wonky. It's also just not all that great at detecting if I'm using it. I thought Tearaway used it well but it kept like thinking my finger was going on and off it.

However there's really not that many games that heavily use it so it's not a huge issue with holding the system in general. Overall I found the Vita to be incredibly ergonomic. I've got pretty big hands and it fits fine.

As for the other complaints...
  • You can turn off the music.
  • There's a drastic difference between the Go screen and the Vita screen, being an owner of both. The colors are "saturated" because that's what OLED does, it makes colors bright and pop. I don't see that as a negative really.
  • The analog sticks are short so like, y'know, it doesn't poke out of your pocket or break off easily. It takes a while to get used to but I've been able to aim pretty well now.
  • The screen doesn't really smudge much for me. Honestly just be a clean person. My fingertips are pretty much clean after I take a shower. There's very little oils or stuff and they're pretty easy to clean off too.
  • As said, it's designed for your finger, not a stylus. To be fair I think a captive touchscreen is much more better than a resistive touchscreen, there's a lot more you can do with it.
I think honestly, hardware wise, the Vita is the best handheld to date. It's very well designed and it feels just sleek and modern. It's got a good library so far, admittedly it could use more but it has room to grow.

You can always buy a special stylus for capacitive screens, but I have absolutely no idea why you'd want to use one - the system and the games are designed to be used by your thumbs, by holding a stylus, you have to let go of one side of the system which is silly when it's not designed with that in mind.

The colours are ten zillion quadrillion times better on the PSVita, maybe you should adjust your brightness or something. It's literally one of the best screens out there, which is why it was so highly-praised.

Get a protective screen by the way - you don't want that screen scratched!

As for the rear grip point, the reason the recesses are there is that you're supposed to put the sides of your middle fingers in them - you're not supposed to have your fingers outstretched at all times, only when you want to use the touchpad. I know it sounds like an Apple thing to say, but... you may be holding it wrong, or at least not how it was designed to be held. Try my way and see if you like it better. ;)
