Hey guys, I recently bought an R4i Gold 3DS Deluxe. Shortly after buying it, I saw Zelda and Pokemon on the incompatibility list so I relented and bought these games from the store. Little did my uninformed self know that these games require updating your 3DS to the 6.3 filmware.

I've recently heard about Nand and am perplexed by it. Does this allow you to play official later filmware requiring games on a 4.5 system? Would someone please give me an exact definition of what it is? Can this only be done by Gateways or can R4i Deluxes do it too? (if not, will it be able to in the future?)

Also, this isn't really a homebrew question but if I have an ambassador 3DS, and wanted to get a 3DS XL, would the 20 games transfer?

Thanks for any help. Please feel free to respond to any or all questions.

EmuNAND = Emulation of the real 3DS nand on the MicroSD card (that means that the official firmware doesn't get touched when updating). Currently it's only avaible for GW but R4i released a video showing the function.
You can't use the systemtransfer with EmuNAND (at least not for the Gateway EmuNAND).

Hmm, I'm a little confused though. If the process runs through a microSD card, how would you play official games? (assuming the microsd card is in the 3DS flash cart and not the other SD card slot, or is this not the case?) Oh, does the update happen through the microsd card 1 time and then it's permanent even when taken out?

If it's for retail games, you could install the Gateway software, and use the emuNAND's classic mode to play your retail carts. Just be very sure to follow the instructions to the letter or you could risk updating your real NAND.

But doing it that way, you'd have to switch back and forth between the gateway and r4i software every time you want to do something else(gateway for emuNAND, r4i for your flashcard), though.

EDIT: I would assume that would work, but I have no way of testing it.

Or you could wait for the R4i guys to release their own emuNAND type thing.

What it does is add a partition to your SD card and make a copy of your NAND. Whenever you run the exploit, it loads from the NAND on the SD card instead of on the internal chip which protects you from ever updating it to patch the exploit.

You update the emuNAND to 6.3 and then can play any games requiring a higher firmware on this emuNAND including retail bought games. This feature is right now limited to Gateway but other manufacturers have released videos showing they have it working.

System transfer reboots the system before hand which loads the internal firmware again which would only be 4.1-4.5. The only way to system transfer would be if you have hardware to backup and restore the NAND via soldering cables on the motherboard.

So, if it works through the SD card, why do you need Gateway at all?

Go to Gateway's site and grab the latest firmware. Stick the launcher.dat on your 3DS' SD card and the GW_INSTALLER.NDS on any DS mode flashcard. Run the NDS file to install the exploit, then follow the instructions given in the GW firmware files to set up and update emuNAND(To the letter. If you screw up, you'll update your real NAND and be fucked). After it's all set up, just launch classic mode from the GW launcher and you should be able to play your newer retail games.

If you want to use your R4i card again, you have to replace the GW launcher.dat with the R4i version, and probably re-install the exploit from DS mode.

EDIT: Installing emuNAND formats your 3DS' SD card, so be sure to keep a backup of its contents on your computer.

This is verified just by reading, you can setup the initial gw exploit with any ds mode cart, you can also enter their gui and backup nand/ format emunand without the cart, the Red Gateway Cart itself is only needed if you wanna play roms, info is at official GW site, also i take it you mean you purchased the games on a different 3ds, as are you able to enter the eshop and purchase titles on a 4.x system ??

http://gateway-3ds.com/

For 4.1-4.5 3DS
Turn Wifi Off, run the Blue Card installer from a ds mode Cart
Hold L down when you enter GW Mode (System Settings/DS Profile) to enter GW GUI
Backup Contents of SD Card and copy GW launcher to it
If you wish, Backup Nand, which creates a Nand.bin on SD Card, Shutdown or whatever and copy nand.bin to PC, this means if something even happens to system, you can use Hardware mod to downgrade with it.
Reenter GW GUI like above, This time goto Format EmuNAND
Re-enter System Settings, click DS Profile without holding down L
System will boot in GW Mode (EmuNAND)
Goto System Settings, you will see FW Ver. Prefixed by GW3D
Goto page 4 of system setting, system update, this will update the EmuNAND to 6.3
After update it will fall back to RealNAND Home Menu (This also happens anytime you exit system settings while running in EmuNAND)
Re-enter GW Mode, this should now boot to a GW3D 6.3.x EmuNAND
If you goto System Settings to Check, you will go back to RealNAND on exit, which means re-entering GW Mode Again
For Eshop titles and playback you need to enter GW GUI and choose Classic Mode, this will run the EmuNAND without the GW3D prefix and system settings will just show 6.3.x .... However its still running off a 4.x base, so any retail games you play that had a update Partition 6.x will use new KeyY, so if you have an existing save, Classic Mode will corrupt it, Happens with Layton, Zelda and Mario Party

to use R4i again you would just need to replace the GW launcher on your SD with their launcher, if they are named differently, dont think you would need to run their initial Card aswell as im pretty sure they used GWs identical Exploit Embedded in Wood

You just follow the normal instructions to setting it up. Looks like that's done by placing its launcher.dat on the 3DS' SD, and running "3DS Setup" from within the DS mode cards menu.

Your emuNAND partition will still be on the 3DS' SD, so you only need to replace the launcher.dat with the GW one if you want to return to emuNAND.

Pretty sure you can just swap the launchers, dont need to install exploit again if its active..

Wait, I just want to be clear. I have actual physical copies of the games, these aren't downloads from the e-shop. Will this still work?

Also, what do you mean by DS Mode flashcard? ("adding GW_INSTALLER.NDS to DS Mode Flashcard")

A flashcard that runs in DS mode and plays normal DS ROMs/homebrew. But it looks like you won't need to do that if you already have your R4i set up, just replace the launcher.dat on the 3DS' SD card with the GW one.

Ahh I see, well I don't actually have my R4i on me right now (it's still shipping). I'll try when I get it. Thanks so much!
