I would appreciate it if you could help a brother out by pointing what thread I need to read and any protips. I tried hacking my ps3 a while back, but wasted a good three hours of my life doing some absolute pointless shit. I'm guessing I updated my ps3 sometime in 2013, so i'm not sure if that completely deems it as "unhackable", but if anyone knows how to do it and can lead me to the light that I need to study, I would more than appreciate it

I am not 100% sure but I have tried to get informed about it as well since some while and what I think to "know" is :

If you are above 3.55 you need to downgrade first and depending on the consoles mainboard? you either need to do some hardware modifications or buy one of those "expensive" dongle (but not 100% sure) when you are still not over 3.55 it should be no problem !

If you are above do a short google search about hackable ps3's there are some wikis that show you the names of the ones that work

I have been considering hacking mine and from what I have gathered for my situation (up to date fat PS3) I am probably best served getting an ODE device. I have been considering the 3k3y

In my understanding downgrading is risky and requires rather expensive hardware to pull off. Maybe if you knew someone who had the hardware and the know how but it seems to me that 3k3y is the more cost effective solution.

Need more info. You can't just expect help when you provide very little info. What PS3 do you have? FAT, Slim, or Super Slim?

ODE is not cost effective, downgrading is. For FAT PS3 you need to determine whether it is NAND or NOR model first. You check the model number on the bottom of PS3.

For just 1 PS3, it is better to pay someone else to do the downgrading for you (especially if you have NAND model). It is typically cheaper than buying a hardware flasher or ODE. Best place to find people who offer downgrade service is to register at PS3 Hax forum and look for people there.

Right, well if I don't know anyone and buying a hardware flasher seemed just as or more expensive than an ODE last time I looked in to it a few months back. I guess finding a downgrade service would probably be cheaper but that seems like a shady hard to find service.

Also I thought newer models could not be downgraded anyway. Wasn't 3.55 many years ago?

Yes, some newer model (starting with some CECH-25xxx) cannot be downgraded at all. If you do have such newer model, your only option is ODE. Keep in mind that all ODE for newer/non-downgradable model requires soldering, and since it requires you to remove 4 capacitors prior to soldering consider ODE installation permanent on these models.

As for finding downgrade service, it is really not that shady. There are a lot of people offering downgrade service here: http://www.ps3hax.net/forumdisplay.php?f=25

For example, I paid $60 total (including both way shipping) to have this guy downgrade my PS3 (this one only does NOR PS3 though): http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?t=38609
