Hacking Can dev-hackers make Wii U play normal Blu-ray Discs of films/series?

The Wii U games are on 25GB Blu-ray Discs (they haven't needed to use 50GB, I guess) and as such is there any chance that it could be unlocked to play normal Blu-ray Discs?

Wii after being hacked could play DVDs so there's that chance of it.

They're not exactly BluRay discs, they don't conform to BluRay standards, but I'd assume that the drive does (for obvious reasons also known as "savings") so if there's no lockout chip that could prevent such playback (see: later Wii models) it should be entirely within the realm of possibilities.

They haven't yet created a way to play back Blu-Ray's with open source software. Like, at all.

So hardware aside, you're going to be waiting a while.

Security measures are not so much a part of a player library - circumventing them is the work of hackers, not engineers. :P

Hm... that is indeed new.

However, to quote:

"Most commercial Blu-Ray are protected by AACS or BD+ technologies and this library is not enough to playback those discs.
People interested in AACS technologies should have a look at libaacs."

I understand the desire for an all in one, or even just to save space....but if you can afford the Wii U, can't you also afford the 40 bucks it takes to buy a blu-ray player?
Makes sense, but then again those $40 could also go toward another game ;)

*recognizes his cheapness*

I was unaware that spending $300 meant you got $40 from nowhere. Just because you can afford one thing doesn't mean you can afford both.

On a side note, are they really that cheap now? Last time I checked, the cheapest ones were still twice that.

You spent $300 on a Wii U? Really? I can get an 32gb right now for 200, new in box.

And a quick Google search showed players on Ebay for 18 bucks with free shipping. If you want in store, I found one for 44 in a local search.

All depends on how much effort you put into shopping around.

Hardware wise I am pretty sure the Wii-U could play BD movies and probably even has some hardware in the GPU related to acceleration of playback...

The issue as others have stated is that any player made to play movies would run smack into the DMCA and MPAA and probably 3 other acronyms that would all probably send a lot of cease and desist letters to any company or web page hosting information and or a working hack or program.

Legal action, stopping innovation since the invention of lawyer. (kidding, well mostly.)

Edit: As a side note to all of this I own a PS3 that can play BD movies and I own zero BD movies. After getting Netflix and a bunch of other online streaming stuff (there is a lot of content online that is totally free if you have the bandwidth to pull it off.) I really don't feel like buying movies anymore unless I can get them for like 5-7 bucks new (I do buy some at that price but only if I see something worthy of taking up shelf space with several hundred other movies....)

Even youtube has a pretty good selection of free movies if you can find that section (they keep it kind of buried for some odd reason.) 6th day was a good movie if you haven't seen it a hundred times already.

Any my local library is even streaming large parts of it's video collection online as long as you have a membership. (I think other libraries are doing this as well but I don't know about those.)

Thinking about this a bit, I am surprised no company has tried to get Nintendo to let them make an app for the Wii-U that would be a BD movie player. instead of spending 40 bucks at the store on a physical player a company could charge like 20 bucks (probably most of it being profit.) and Wii-U owners who wanted the option would get to watch BD movies if they wanted too.

Because that would still mean covering the licenses and the higher rate of hardware failure.

Higher rate of hardware failure? Based on? I am sure streaming is more harmful than Netflix, internet browser, Wii U gaming, etc. Cannot see anything straining more than those functions.

I think I remember reading that the license for a player was something like $1.60 or something, so I can see not including it in the console since not everyone would use it. Selling the software though would be profitable.

As for covering the drive with a warranty, I don't think playing a movie at 1X speed is harder on a drive than say playing a game disk at 4X speed.

Unless watching movies would cause people to actually use the machine and thus cause hardware failures... but that's a bit like Schrodinger's cat of hardware failures.
