I propose gbatemp to automatically lock threads after some length of inactivity, say 3 months.

My idea is to prevent people from bumping old threads. Many people bump old threads because they want some helps, and I think it is best for them to start a new thread then to hijack an old thread.

In addition making an exception for sticky threads.

3 months is way too short.
It would encourage loads of thread duplicates.

while i will agree that necro bumping can be annoying, it is only so for bumps that serve no purpose. adding on to a 2 yr old conversation with relevant information is perfectly acceptable. that information helps the next person who stumbles upon that thread 2 years later with the exact same questions/solutions. automatically locking threads would serve no purpose but to create more duplicate threads, don't we have enough of those already?

Been suggested a lot of times before.
Won't happen since someone could have a rare problem and years later, some other fella has a solution.

The only slightly problematic ones I see are new members bumping old releases, usually somewhat obscure ones, thinking they are a reply to the thread to unlock downloads type affair.

Other than that I have yet to see a true recurring issue with bumps and most of the bumps we do see are "this is how this news story played out", "I have just done something for this game", "for some reason this is the top ranked search* and the answers given have been rendered wrong by more recent developments", actually something worth adding in general or simply the result of someone trying to not increase fragmentation.

*this is quite the problem in a lot of homebrew, ROM hacks, ROM hacking tools and sometimes some methods of doing things. When it happens I will usually try to edit things/clean them up but we can not see everything happen.

Necrobumping is fine if the bump is actually on topic and relevant to that discussion. There is only a problem when the bump is useless, usually a spambot will necrobump a thread with nonsense as an example. But as long as people do not reply to the bump with "omg reported!!!!" type equally useless posts once we spambot the bot the thread becomes unbumped again.

i agree with old threats staying open, the only problem is when people answer to months old discussions\fights\opinions basically, answer to off topic or keep off topic... but this can be prevented with cleaning up irrelevant posts on old threads

so i am gonna put here an "upgrade" to this suggestion, how about high cleanup old threads, like remove all the coffee talk and what is not revelant or is not helpfull

edit: i wanted to mean old threads staying open

This is a case of something not being broken so we do not need to fix it. As I already said necrobumps either occur due to spambots, idiots or the bump is valid, either way we can deal with a bump fairly easily.

Going through ten years worth of threads and removing the "coffee talk" as you put it is something that I am absolutely against. Firstly it is a ridiculously huge task for even a large group of people to accomplish, GBAtemp has almost three hundred thousand discussion threads after all, it would take months if not years to "clean up" old threads.

Secondly removing the "coffee talk" is akin to vandalism as far as I am concerned. It is the equivalent of walking into an ancient pyramid and wallpapering over the hieroglyphics so that everything looks neater for visitors. All those old threads are part of GBAtemps history and its personality so they should remain preserved as they are.

you have a point, and i really see what you mean, if you put this way, you are right, its cool to see peoples personality after some years

and today i had found i am a hypocrite, i hate when governament say i only can use a special type of orange juice, and i can't drink the other, and i am here suggesting we should "clean" "people being people"... you understand what i mean? like, big companies doesn't want you to use homebrew on their consoles so they just put a lot of drm and people must find a way of making it happen, i know i sometimes don't make sense... but i hope you understand

as for taking years for "clean up" old threads, i am not saying to make a quick cleaning like your family will visit your house tomorrow so you stay up to 3am cleaning the house, what i say is, sometimes, when mods have free time (i know its hard to have), pick a random old thead and "moderate" it, but common sense says: there is at least one moderator who does this once in a while

Why? Those threads were moderated while they were active, there's no point in them being moderated all over again. The posts that remain in old threads were deemed acceptable, the forum rules haven't changed in the meantime, and there's no reason to remove anything at this point.

Exactly and like I said we are not going to sterilise any of the old threads on the forum, if people want pure information with no discussion they can browse a wiki, FAQ or tutorial.

There really is no reason to keep this discussion going on for the reasons I have explained in my prior posts, thread closed.
