As the title says...

I was able to score a PSP 2000 for free since it needed some repairs. At first I thought it was a simple matter of the battery being more than done (seriously, thing swelled up to the point it wouldn't fit in the battery compartment anymore ). But on a lark I tried plugging in its power cable to check out to see if it might still work... and saw that the screen was cracked.

Thankfully I have the tools to open up and replace what need be done, but for that, I could appreciate some help.

Simply... where/what would be the largest capacity battery that I could get inexpensively for this thing? The first and obvious constraint is that it has to fit in the battery compartment, since the factory battery has to be thrown away.

Secondly... I know that Fry's previously had the CR-5400 adapter that seems to be just flat out legendary here on gbatemp, but looking more recently I couldn't find it explicitly listed anymore, but rather one that look-alike like it. Do these SD-to-MSPD adapters all work the same or what?

Official 1200 mAh battery is the best you can get. I never trust third part battery that claims more capacity than Sony. To increase battery capacity, you must either increase the physical size of the battery or change the battery chemistry. Third party battery still uses Lithium ion, and their size isn't larger than Sony. It is scientifically impossible for them to be longer lasting than Sony battery.

CR5400 was discontinued years ago (2010). Anything you buy online these days is a counterfeit/fake CR5400. These fakes either work, don't work, or work partially. If worked, they will be slower than real MSPD card. I have two experiences with these adapters, one where it fried/killed my 32 GB microSD, and other where only slot 1 was working. You are playing lottery with these adapters.

Do yourself a huge favor and buy real MSPD card. They maybe expensive, but they are trouble free. You can get 32 GB for the price of $50 to $60.

I bought two CR5400's from Amazon, one functions perfectly fine, the other one "lags" a bit when both slots are used hence has problems with certain plugins/POPS but other then that, they're perfectly functional and a good "cheap" alternative. A genuine MSPD is naturally far better, but if you want a lot of capacity cheaply, I wouldn't dismiss them as I've been using those adapters for at least 2 years now. If you don't want to risk a twin-slot one, there are single-slot SD adapters out there.

*expletive* that. Only thing I could find anywhere is an 8GB MSPD - not even a high-end one - for $40 at Best Buy. I could sooner get a microSD to MSPD adapter and a 32gig UHS-1 to stick in there for that price.

Amazon isn't either. I'd already been having more than my fair share of frustrations in dealing with buying anything through amazon.

Still need a screen, too.

A real MSPD of any size is absurdly expensive. Considering this isn't going to be my main PSP of any means (I still have a go that has been pretty handy), it doesn't make sense for me at this time to pay top dollar like that.

For screen salvage it from another broken PSP-2000. Different model of PSP use different connector for screen, so you must salvage it from another PSP-2000.

Considering that 32 GB MSPD debuted at the price of $120, $50 is a good price; putting it at the same level as CF memory card. But if you really want to go with 32 GB microSD route, get a Class 2 or Class 4 memory card. UHS-1 will be wasted on the adapter. Go for single slot adapter rather than dual slots. Another alternative I have in mind for those who really don't want to spend too much money is to install ME CFW and use USB-PC loading on backup games. That way a simple 1 GB MSPD card is all you need.

$50 vs. $20~30 is still a huge factor... I didn't enjoy paying the marked up rate for the M2 card in my PSP go as is.

So in short, at least for the 2000, it's not worth the extra cost to get a high-speed card, you say? That should save me some bucks, too. :yaypsp:

The adapter has to translate SD signal to MSPD signal back to back. If you use dual slot adapter it also operates in JBOD mode. These all adds up to slowing the read and writing speed. Is not that PSP can't utilize the speed.

Curious, what about this? Saw it on Newegg, and they're even letting you get a two-pack, lol.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2C50XD9336

Still fake one. Actually it is not even sold by Newegg, but rather First from Asia.

It is similar to how you sell things on ebay. Ebay is not the actual seller, but rather third party who facilitate the transaction.

Sad thing about these fake dual slot adapters is that they all look the same. So there is no way to isolate which adapter will work fine. If you find an adapter doesn't work, go buy another one till it works.

Yea, I know I would want to put a 32gig microSD in there if this thing works out as it's cracked up to be.

That and I was kind of inspired because I saw someone had one of these CR5400's (or a clone) and was able to put two 64GB microSD's in it to get ~113GB's of storage. Personally, I thought that was insanely cool, and really made my PSP Go feel inadequate by comparison.

On the upside, soon as I can get a screen in and verify it works, I do have a line on getting an extended battery for the phone for a more reasonable price than the overinflated rates for official Sony batteries on Amazon.

Nope. 3600mAh extended battery with a set of replaceable doors for the 2/3k PSP's, new.

Like I told you before, there are only two ways to safely increase battery capacity, either increase physical size of the battery or change battery chemistries.

If they advertised 3600 mAh, either they are lying or they are cutting corner to achieve that capacity, at the expense of safety. Depending on how they cut corner battery can either have much shorter lifespan or explode. Sony achieved 2200 mAh battery by increase the size of the battery quite a bit, bulging the battery outward and requires a new battery door.

Both Sony and knock-off battery use Lithium-ion as the basis of battery chemistry, so only increasing physical size can increase battery capacity.

Amazon wants $50 for just the basic 1200mAh unit, and $130 for the 2200.

As I tried making it clear before, I wasn't even initially planning on making this my primary PSP even if I do get it working again, so spending about as much as a Vita to fix it up is nonsensical, and impractical. Considering the original battery it came with ballooned to near-bursting, I don't have a whole lot of stock in faith to a Sony-branded battery working that well.

It's also not that strange anymore to see a higher-capacity battery of the same physical size. you see it all the time for phones.
