I can't believe it! Gateway was working perfectly and I had played so many hours of the game. Then one day, I load it up and the game says not to turn off the game while it creates a save file or something. I didn't understand why but then I checked and saw that my save file was gone!!

I'm disgusted and I have no desire to start a new file. These type of games are not the kind you want to start a new file on.

Frankly, I'm debating whether or not I should just update my 3DS XL so I can play Pokémon or not, because what's the point of having Gateway if your saves are just going to disappear! Even if Gateway makes Pokémon work, what's the point if my save can just disappear one day? Can't believe how disgusted I am.

There have been many reports like this but still it's unknown how it happens.

As for me, I made a backup of all my saves a couple of days ago.

Sometimes Happens if you directly turn off the 3DS instead of going home and then turn off the 3DS, it's normal.

It will be fixed in 2.0!

- Will you support saving without needing to close the application? Yes, we are working on directly updating the savegame file on SD when the savegame chip is being updated. We hope to have it ready for the 2.0 release.

I mean normal because that's how the hack works, it's safer to go "home" for the savefile to be written inside the SD, if you turn off the 3DS some times there is not enought time for the savefile to be created, especially on those big saves.

I found that the issue occurred frequently if I didn't use the home button -> x -> a shutoff method. If I went straight to kill power, it would sometimes wipe the data, which is unfortunate in itself. ;)

I assure you that I always press Home and then X to exit. The ONLY thing that *might* have caused it is that I turned off the console right after the game closed. Maybe I should have left it longer to give it time to write to the memory card? Either way, I think I'll stick to cheap games that even if I lose my save file, I won't be too disgusted (like Mario, etc.).

So that's how it happens? Glad to know it. I actually never turn off my 3DS, unless it runs out of battery, but that only occurs while it's on sleep modo. For the save method, you just have to close the game from the home menu, regardless if you press the X button, tap the X on the lower screen or open another app directly, that of course forces to close the current game on use.

Sounds like a race condition where the Gateway code doesn't have time to finish writing to the SD card before the game shuts off. You should expect this kind of teething problems in the early stages of console piracy (you and all the other early GW adopters are essentially guinea pigs).

Well, I think the old save file was overwritten when the game created a new save file. When you load up RF4 for the first time, it says that it's creating a save file and to not shut off the game. This is what happened when I lost my save. Now, when I load up, it doesn't say that anymore, so it's using the new blank save file that was created when the old one stopped working or whatever. I don't have any hopes of recovering it.

Well if you don't want to try then that's your fault. Unless you've overwritten it enough times that it takes up the space available on your SD cardd it's unlikely that the file has been truly deleted.

I remember a number of people reporting problems like this just after the Gateway came out. Because of that, I've made it a point to back up my saves to my PC every so often. I've never actually experienced a corrupted save, though.

This.

Get something like Recuva or Active undelete, they've saved me in the past, your save file probably has a good 90% chance of being saved I would say.

So just to straighten everything up, the best path to take is to leave the game after saving by exiting to the home menu, then closing the game, and then turning off the 3DS to ensure that no saves are deleted?

That is what the manual included with the firmware says to do and I for one haven't had any problems and this is the only way I exit my games. Home menu, close game, shut down.

I've only encountered that save message once. I forgot to hit home before closing the game, then switched to a different game, then switched back. Luckily my save was safe. But from now on, I make sure I use the Home + X + A sequence before turning the console off.

That's the price u pay for using a device that allows u to play pirated games... if u never want to lost a save then buy the same and support the devs.

Always backup your save files before using any kind of device that would allow u to play pirated games...

I don't know how safe this Gateway is but I sure as hell wont be logging into facebook or Netflix with this device in a 3DS.
