im new to the wii scene. what is the current state of wii modding?

are modchips blocked by new firmware?

will modchips work on any hardware?

also, if you softmod a wii, can you still go online and access the Wii store?, or will updating firmware erase all homebrew programs

No, go for softmod!!
Modchips are outdated!
I don't know of the online gaming/Wii shop still works.
But you can alway play all the wiiware software free by installing wab files yo want to play.

oh, is wiiware similar to PSP, in that PSN can run on produo card

so is there any advantage to a modchip?, i remember on Ganecube and PS2 modchips were better than diskswap and sdload

Nowadays the only advantage a modchip brings is to run games through the optical drive. The only real situation where this could be advantageous is if you for instance have kids that could mess up your system by pressing the wrong buttons. Otherwise, softmod all the way. Faster loading times, less wear on the laser and easier to use.

It seems you don't know a lot of what you are talking about, yet you are quick at giving an unsure answer.

Modchips might be outdated, but I still find it useful to be able to boot burned disc ( there was a time when some dual layer discs weren't compatible with softmods, and being able to burn them gave me the chance to play them flawlessly before the others ), and also if his Wii has GC support, a modchip would allow to boot and play backups of GC games without any audio streaming issues and with perfect compatibility/speed.

Also WAD files have nothing to do with retail discs, like you said is only for WW and WC if he is interested.

That said, I would recommend the OP to follow the mighty Modmii guide and softmod his Wii to perfection which should take care of all his immediate needs.
And get a compatible USB Drive and play Wii games with shorter loading times and a nice USB Loader Gui.

I hope the OP is able to follow my links and find the right solution for him, I hate when people ignore useful comments and keep asking the same thing over and over again.

thank you the information is helpful.

regarding Gamecube, i do own a GC with Xeno chip installed, but am unable to find a large cover, and Memorex Mini-DVD-r dont seem to work very well.

long story short: GC backups on full size DVD-Rs would be nice, but not a huge deal, and maybe not worth the risk of breaking it.

OK, then go for a softmod, like you said, the real advantage would be able to perfectly play GC backups , but since you already have a modded GC, risking to damage your Wii by soldering a modchip in it seem to be quite redundant.
Really , at this point I would recommend you to get a compatible USB HDD ( follow the link I provided above to make sure you don't get any trouble ) and use Modmii to hack your Wii and get the latest sofmods available.
If you didn't try before, USB Loaders ( USB Loader GX, CFG USB Loader or Wiiflow ) are amazing and easy to use and will immensely improve your gaming experience.

Oh...and thanks for listening ;)
