Hi, I hope this is ok to make a thread about something as specific as this, I would have posted it in the pokemon discussion thread but I am 'scared' to go in there since I have not got the game yet and I do not want to see any spoilers etc.

I can imagine the the data format each pokemon is stored in is different in this game, in gen 4 and 5, maybe 3 too, if you caught a pokemon from a E or U region game, and traded it to a J game, if the pokemon was bulbasaur, when it was time for it to evolve, the name would change to the japanese name of ivasaur.
if you look in pokesav/save editing programs, you will see there is a 'language' field in the pokemon editor, maybe i am confused, what exactly is this for?

but, what i am wondering is, since with the new games we can change the language of the game, if i am playing in spanish and then i change my language to french, will all the pokemon that i already have, with their spanish names, now be in french? or will they stay in spanish?
so when i catch a new pokemon, or evolve an old one, the name will now be in the new language?

i think this would be really easy to see, just change your language from english or whatever, to japanese, and see what happens.

and, not only the 'language', but i wonder if the region is saved, like, so even if you play on a korean cart, but in english, if your region inside the save, for the pokemon whatever, will be korean. when we can edit the save files all will be revealed i guess ha... anyway, thanks, i appreciate any/all information

You set your language you play the game in before you start the game. Once you choose it, you can never change it again.
oh!! aha, that is a nice way to simplify things! i thought i read that it was possible to change it, just not like 'in game', i thought you needed to save, exit, then change it, then you can play in the other language.

but that is not possible? sure ok :) thanks for that.

The language is used for trading, at least. I got a Japanese Pikachu from a trade and it registered the Japanese entry for Pikachu in my dex. Now I have a bilingual Pokedex with a language select button at the top, lol. Later I also got a Spanish Pokemon IIRC and that was added to my Dex as well.

oh yeah, thanks! now i remember about that old man in platinum i think, who gave me a german magikarp? i wonder if x/y has the same multi language pokedex, if it has to be 'unlocked', by trading a pokemon from another language.

Yes, it has. I'm not sure but I suspect it's for ALL Pokemon instead of just a few now. Like I said, I have 1 Japanese and 1 Spanish entry in my Dex. Other languages won't show up until you get any Pokemon from them.

yeah i think in gen v this was the case.

i just read that UP + X + B will delete your save game so you can start afresh, and select a new language.

Out of interest.. is the Masuda method confirmed to be working in this game yet?
until it is confirmed, you might have to keep breeding thousands of eggs and see what percent many turn out shiny... ha

If you start your game in English then it will stay In English unless you start a new game and select another language. if someone trades you a Japanese pokemon then that name will stay in Japanese unless you give it a nickname.

as far as editing pokemon I would not do that

If you evolve a foreign pokémon without a nickname, it's name will change to the name for your language.
