Like off USBLoader GX or something? Here's the thing, I'm planning to buy games on disc later but I womder if I should just buy an HDD. Would the games run off an HDD without fail?

The games will run off an HDD without fail and with faster loading times. You can use a PC to dump your games provided you have a compatible DVD drive.

You only need a working Wii drive if you ever plan to dump your game collection but yeah, as long as the SD slot and USB slot is okay, then you can play games off USB HDD.

How can you tell if the lens is broken?

By putting in a genuine disc and having a hard time reading it (or failing to read it at all)? :P

To be honest, I recommend UBS reading regardless of the state of the laser simply because I'm a collector and the laser lens and assembly are prone to failure over time while the USB port will never fail you - it's simply the superior method of loading which is easier on the hardware and allows you to preserve the system for longer.

So failing to read it would include "cannot read disc; look at the Operations Manual" message then, huh.

I get that a lot and the loading times are really sluggish do I figured the lens is weak.

Yes, you can use an app like WiiMC to play videos off an HDD even if it has games on it too.
The Wii keeps on giving! :)

It should be noted that the Wii cannot play HD videos, and it even struggles with some standard-definition videos encoded as H.264 (MP4), depending on how graphically intensive the video is. WiiMC is great if you're playing Xvids though.

I don't download HD videos so it's all cool. Mkv? Should I hope?

MKV videos are typically encoded using H.264 (same as MP4), which the Wii can struggle with depending on the nature of the video. If it's a standard resolution video with a high bitrate and a lot of action, you might run into some AV sync issues. If it's animated, you likely won't run into any problems. To minimize these problems, you'll want to go into WiiMC's settings and set Frame Dropping to "Always." The reason the Wii can struggle with graphically intensive videos is because the Wii just isn't that strong of a machine.

If you use Xvid, you likely won't run into any problems. Xvid is less intensive that H.264.

Pretty much anything can still be found as Xvid on the internet if one knows where to look, despite MP4/H.264 being the new standard.
