Just get a DSTWO and it should be fine. It'll probably ship with at least 6.2... possibly even 6.3. The DSTWO works with all firmware currently.

Cause its a new revision of the XL its gonna be 5.1+ firmware, now is it gonna be 6.1.6.2 or others, we don't know.

If u are getting him a DS Flashcard then i suggest u to get DSTWO, its a bit pricey but it supports the newest firmware.
If u wanna go the cheap way then get R4i Gold from R4ids.cn.
R4i Gold can he easily blocked by Nintendo, it survives about 4-5 max system updates and then it gets fully blocked while DSTWO can't be blocked.

really good info. i think an r4i gold would be good. i want him to eventually play actual 3ds games but dont want to pay $80 for the gateway.

DSTWO and R4i Gold 3DS can't play 3DS roms, only DS roms.
And gateway wouldn't work on ur 3DS XL system cause gateway only works from 4.0-4.5 firmware.

And about R4i Gold, try to get the revision D.

yea, im aware that all cards play ds roms on 3ds. he's fine with that.
i guess i will wait for further updates to the gateway then.
what revision are you referring to on the r4i gold 3ds? get it already flashed to work on 6.3?

i was looking into the r4i gold 3ds
I asked in case you were thinking of getting the GateWay, which you will likely not be able to use on your 3DS.

As for DS flashcarts, I hear nothing but great things for the DSTWO. It is the card to beat.

With a limited edition DS, you could probably manage to sell it for more than you paid for, and with that money, just get a base model 3DS XL and a gateway, and extra money in your pocket (Depending how much you sell LE 3DS for). This is just an idea. Not sure how interested you are in keeping the Pokemon one.

I bought a 3DS XL on sale at Walmart last Friday for $150.

Most of shops online pre flash the card so it can work on the latest firmware.
I know that the latest one is the D revision, i would get that one.
The C one needs to open and cut some things on the card which i don't like at all, and there is 1 Rev C that's been bugged and only works till 4.5 version.
I really wouldn't get a R4ids.cn R4i Gold card cause i had bad experience with them(Got a Rev C card and it was blocked by the new firmware aka 5.1 which made my card obsolete) DSTWO is lots more reliably and it can emulate GBA and SNES games too.

Yeah, I'd definitely suggest the DSTWO as well. I was a big Supercard fan long before that even came out :P

Not sure why R4s are so popular. They usually have pretty crappy firmware and suck at compatibility. AceKard and DSTWO were the best, but since AceKard is dead in the water, only one clear winner remains.

Just curious, but what makes you so sure that the DSTwo card can't be blocked?

I mean i'm not trying to argue I just purchased a DS Two and was wondering if it would the end all be all solution for me.

Thanks!

Because they're cheap, and a lot of people buying them are kids that want a ton of games without spending much money.
You say that like wanting a ton of games without spending much money is a bad thing. Getting more back than you put in is called profit.
They're profiteers. ;) The most capitalistic of us all. Unrestrained by the influence of guilt and fairness. Let the market hash it out, this rival product is cheaper and identical to yours. Copyrights are market interference. Git yer big brother outta my freedomland.

You could cancel the pre-order, buy a secondhand 3DS, and get a Gateway for the same price, if not less. If you're going to teach your son it's okay to pirate games, you might as well make up for it by teaching him that looks aren't everything. He doesn't need the paintjob.

Unlike every other cart, it's never been blocked. It uses special update methods and new hardware to get around the checks.

It's not like other cart teams don't know about this, they just CHOOSE not to do it because it would cost them more.

Well that is pretty interesting. You definitely pay a premium for their card but honestly I think its worth it, if not for the main reason not being blocked but the GBA emulator, abd GB/GC as well as SNES etc. That to me is pretty awesome. Playing GBA games on the XL screen is pretty nice and I surely can't wait =) it says it'll be delivered tomorrow to heres to hoping!
