Can someone recommend to me some of the best games released only in Japan which have had english translation patches released? Platforms I'm looking for are PSP, DS and PSX. Thanks a lot.

PS: Ideally the games are either strategy's or RPG's.

That is.... A really hard category.

Monster Hunter 3 Freedom for psp is one I know
Gee, just type the name of a jap only game into google and put "English patch" after it and hope for the best i'd say

No GBA? :(
I wanted to suggest Mother 3 and Telefang 2. Both RPGs, very different from each other but both great.
I don't really know of any translation patches on those platforms, but the DS has a few on here that have had reasonable progress I think. A lot of translation patches never get completed, but you should be able to make your way through the game with a mostly finished translation.

I can understand wanting to play Japanese-specific platformers, but RPGs? They have tons of text, and there's bound to be mistranslations, errors, and the like. Why are you looking exclusively for fan-translated (instead of localized) games, anyway?

PSX:
Tales of Phantasia

DS:
Tales of Innocence

Those are the only games for PSX, DS and PSP that I can think of that are good with decent translation.

I tried Telefang 2 once. It's based on the bootleg translation and isn't really all that good.
It's not all that bad either, though. It's kind of inbetween terrible and really good. It's very understandable at the least.
A proper translation will be done in time, but currently the only translator is working on the first game, the sequel will be done when the original is fully translated which has been in the works for years now already but luckily there's a very dedicated fan who's translating it. So I whipped up a working 100% translation patch within a few days so everyone can enjoy the game right away since a proper one will take years to come :)

Afraid I am going to have to stand up for my little hobby here -- plenty of official games have botched translations, plenty of games have got retranslations and though are certainly those playing translator via google translate most of the ones you will ever hear about do it well with many of the translators being my first port of call should I have to translate something that is not a legal document/patent or some medical stuff.

PSP (there is not a lot here, I am never sure why PSP hacking did not take off)

Oh, I'm not bashing fan-translations. If it weren't for fan translations, I would have never been introduced to visual novels, which are now something I really enjoy. I was just curious as to why the OP wanted games that are fan-translated instead of officially-translated.

Personally I read it as an awkward phrasing of one of the more popular questions we get around here of "I have largely exhausted the official libraries in English of [insert consoles], now I hear there are people that translate the games outside official channels so can I get a list?".

Oh. I guess that makes sense. I've looked up translations here too, but only of series with sequels that ended up skipping NA localization, not all games available.

I check the IGN review page to see which games they recommend playing, and Japanese only games wouldn't be on their listing.

Well since I have a PSP I could try GBA, I just have had poor experiences at times in terms of sound crackling. Starting a game that you're really into and then having poor audio hurt the experience is very frustrating.

Bingo. I suppose I wouldn't be opposed to an action game (as I did enjoy Hammerin Hero). Would you be able to recommend Japanese only games with translations that have that sort of over the top vibe to it?

Over the top but with translations...
First I assume you have played most of the various platformers (starfy, astro boy, Gunstar Super heroes and so on) as most of those you can probably muddle your way through with a guide having explained it once, likewise at least look up a video of Earth Defence Force/Chikyu Boueigun and the various sequels even though it is more recent consoles and PC.

Go! Go! Cosmo Cops never hit North America from what I recall so I will include it.

Jigsaw World - Daigekitou Jig-Battle Heroes, more puzzle than action but it saw me about twitchy as a long session of Gunstar Heroes ever managed. It got a Chinese translation and when I examined it they had actually done quite a bit so it became one of my "if I ever have time" ones but it is quite playable without much/any Japanese knowledge.

Trouble is I tend to play things anyway and some of it gets a translation later so I am not sure what goes other the Starfy is rather neglected.

If you have a DSTWO it does GBA very well with the latest TempGBA but gpSP Kai on a PSP should work pretty well too.

I use the GPSP kai emulator but find that audio is occasionally distorted. Are there any settings I can edit which might improve audio quality?
Frameskip on auto remedies audio issues, but I found setting it manually to 2 (maybe even 1 depending on the game) does the same thing with less frameskip.
Edit: This is on DSTwo though but the same might apply on Kai I guess. Worth a shot.
