Here's the story:

Right now, our current ISP is Shaw Cable. We're on a package that offers 200GB bandwidth, 20mpbs download. We're paying close to 80 bucks a month. In the last year alone, they've raised the price like 6 times, 5 bucks every time, with nothing being given to the customer, so no extra bandwidth or speeds or such.

I showed my parents TekSavvy. And while they don't offer cable, they offer DSL. The package is unlimited GB, 25mbps download, and 55 bucks a month, or even 300GB a month for 45 bucks.

Is DSL much terrible than cable? I've googled stuff and can only find that as long as we're getting above like 1mpbs download, it's okay, in which case we'll be getting 25mbps download.

Can anybody give me info on if DSL is all that bad? Because right now, it's looking pretty fucking sexy switching to DSL.

I'd say go for it.
If your ISP is jacking up the price that much without returning something then ditch them.

Before they weren't bad. But it's only the last year or so that they're doing this. And TekSavvy used to never be offered to us, it's only recently that it has. Before we only had Shaw available out here so we were stuck with them if we wanted internet.

I have zero experience with both (prolly cause I live like halfway across the globe xd)
But the internet here is extremely shitty (well.. I got rubbish internet that is)
Down speeds of like 100 kb max which can drop to 25 kb for a long time ;/

So anything is better then what I got.

DSL isn't inherently worse, it's just that it's usually known to be slower for instance where i live DSL is only offered upto 6mbps down 512kbps up whereas the cable company offers upto 100mbps down 10mbps up.
Tekksavy however uses adsl2+ which isn't really used much in the states for some reason so you shouldn't have an issue.

Right now with Shaw, we get CLOSE to 20mbps download, and just 1mbps upload.

I had dsl years ago back when verizon was bell atlantic and it was called info speed. I used to get about 300Kb ( I wasn't getting the speed promised at the time either ) download speed on napster , and at the time my friend had the home service through comcast. His d/l speed was like almost 700Kb and him and I were paying the same price. Also back then , dsl wasn't always on , I was still dialing in for an IP address , whenever I wanted to connect to the internet it would dial , 1.1.1.1 then eventual connect and if I idled to long it would disconnect. Not sure if dsl is still that way today.
But I do know that speed is determined by how far you are from the hub that is servicing that area ( I know its not a hub , cant remember the name for it ) and the wiring in your house can also cause slower speeds than advertised.
See if they have a trial period to test out the service before you commit .

Hm, not sure if we last had DSL, I think it was cable, albeit without the box. But now we do and its significantly slower than what we had. We now have ATT Uverse, but before we had Insight(which was cheaper too). Insight gave me up to 1.5 MB/s to downloads while uverse gives me up to 500(mostly 300)KB/s.

So...I would say cable is better, hell I don't know. Don't know much about the Canadian ISP's.

The thing about DSL is that it's distance-limited in most situations, a lot of people will get slower speeds on it because they're too far out from the router/hop. Make sure that the speed you read is actually what they can offer to YOU, that is, YOUR ACTUAL HOUSE.

Ya I emailed them to see where they're located.

I have DSL. It's better than dial up, but cheaper than cable. That's about all I have to say about it.

I thought you said you wanted to get lost. Anyway, DSL was horrible 10 years ago. But hopefully that has changed (and I think it has...),and I believe it's as fast as cable in some areas. So yeah, look at the speed in your area.

So I emailed them, and this is what TekSavvy had to say after I asked them stuff like is it worse than having cable right now for us and all this stuff.

Putting my postal code on their website shows that we can get DSL. The lady in the email says they can't.
