GTA V is probably the most anticipated game on the planet at this point, and that hype has only been building with each new reveal. Rockstar has been pretty open about the game's design, layout, story, and characters, but there's one thing that they've kept under wraps - details about the online multiplayer mode. The wait for more information has been a long one, but it's finally here, and it does not disappoint.

Suffice it to say, Rockstar is putting the "grand" in Grand Theft Auto all over again.

To recap some important points from the trailer...
  • Los Santos will be a persistent online world with continual updates from Rockstar. Pretty MMO-like from the looks of it.
  • There will be structured missions and events (like committing bank robberies), but players are free to do as they please
  • Earning money and repuation will be a major mechanic, and money can be used to purchase cribs, garages, etc.
  • Customization is huge - You can customize your character, your clothing, your weapons of choice, your vehicles etc.
  • You can play as female characters, a first for the series (iirc)
  • Classic online modes (races and deathmatch at the very least) are also available
  • Players can create their own races (create the path, set checkpoints, etc.) and deathmatches (allows you to place items, weapons, vehicles, etc.)with a content creator. These can be shared online.
  • GTA Online will not launch with the release of GTA V. It is set for release on October 1st, and will be free for all those who purchase GTA V at retail (Might mean that GTA Online can be purchased separately, but there's no word on this one way or the other at the moment
In the words of CJ (from Grove Street), "That's OG."

Is it too early to call the review scores?

GTA4 online had female presets.

If they actually deliver what they're saying, it'll probably be fun. The only thing fun about GTA4 was its multiplayer.

If they pull a GTA4 and hype it up like this, only to drop it again, I wouldn't be surprised. But here's hoping GTA can actually try to steal back some glory. It'd be about damn time.

I'm not the biggest fan of this series, but that online looks promising.

Los Santos will be enveloped in complete and utter chaos at a scale never seen before within a pictosecond from when the servers launch. The sheer "virtual crime rate" will immediately become an argument for "games make kids violent and turn them into criminals" activists.

Dis gon b gud. ;O;

While I'll politely disagree with GTAV being the most anticipated game as I seem to recall a poll showing only about 51% (of GBATemp voters) actually wanting to buy this game. However, I do recall that GTA is and has always been an extremely popular franchise. Even their lesser titles have remarkable numbers.

In all honesty, I have not played a GTA game since the first two or three. I'm sure GTAV will be amazing from what I've seen. However, I don't really think the concept of an MMO like GTA. GTA's core fanbase is, intentionally, younger adults who have grown up with the franchise being sold to them or their parents. It was a game that was oft passed along to a much younger than intended audience. And recent titles seem to stick to this trend. In my city, the GTA series seems to have the highest market with children approximately 10-14 years old. (With their parents making the purchase no less) I can't imagine an MMO running smoothly with an immature audience like this. Almost every GTA player I've met here prefers to solely run around and snag cars and put the beatdown on old ladies and the like.

Much like the early days of online gaming, and as is the case still today in some games (I'm looking at you COD and Halo) I feel like the MMO element will add a whole new level of gameplay that will be dampened by a poorly acclaimed userbase. I do hope that the online version will have some kind of server selection, or the ability to personally choose the players you are connected with. I'm not sure if this is already the norm. I do not play online games due to the mass of children camping and cursing in a variety of other games. If this is the case however, I may feel inclined to join the world of online gaming. (Wow, thats a wall of text. I hope it doesn't come off as some kind of horrible statement e.e this is meant to be hopeful)

16 player limit, there goes all that potential.

Why? Is it too much? I think it's perfect, if you have a crapload of friends like I do you will enjoy it way more with all your friends!

I am still waiting if they ever will release a Wii U version, I know it probably won't happen but I'll keep hoping!

This seriously looks really good, really excited for the game. The cars, and everything, is like a gamer's erection. I'm glad that this has been pre-ordered from my ass.

Not sure how I got your notification as I'm ignoring you, but I had gizoogle, and felt like using it. Now, if you please, leave me alone, like I will do to you, thank you very much, soulx.
I also suggest you ignore me, if you have a disease from my posts. :)
