Hardware Are some of the parts still salvageable?

So my old pc died a horrendous and horrible death me around a month. so what happened was that i noticed that it was being super slow on me slower than usual so i checked the settings and noticed that it was overheating so i left it off a good 2 hours to cooldown. then when i turned i back on it was still slow so i started chrome and it started to smell like burned rubber and then after a few seconds my pc turned off. after that i disconnected everything i opened the box and checked my motherboard and i noticed something weird on the motherboard three of the fuses so i called my dad and he said the were blown so then he told me to get something out of his tools that connects to the powersupply and i found out my powersupply had given out on me too. so i am wondering if any parts are salvageable (like the hdd Processor video card?) or if it is a complete bust and i have to build a new one?

From your description, the motherboard and power supply blew. You can try salvaging your processor and RAM, but its possible they will be affected too. Your drives and video cards should be safe, but if the fault was caused by heat then its likely your graphics card could be damaged too.

What are the chances of processor being salvageable as i am a little blown on money right know and will have to sell things in order to get some cash rolling for the replacement motherboard and the powersupply. If the chances are slim then i might ask my dad if he can help me out a bit with the cost.As for the ram i am not all that hit by the fact i cannot use it anymore as i was only using a single 2gig DDR2 ram so if i need to replace it it is no big deal.

When it comes to a blown PSU then I find it very much varies (also varies with motherboard a bit if they did not regulate it as tightly as they might if they cut corners for price), likewise if it is heat induced failure then all sorts of things can happen.

On the flip side assuming you check to make sure nothing is bridged then it will be extremely unlikely to damage something else so if you have a friend with a similar setup you can try the parts (do it one at a time) in their machine.

Sadly i don't have anyone with a similar build as me so i am pretty much shooting in the dark with this but i was looking this processor up on newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113335 from what i read it is pretty decent and with this motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128578 will cost me around $140 so that is not bad and is a huge upgrade from the old one i am trying to replace.

Go for a Phenom II 965 BE and an AM3+ mobo instead. It'll give much better performance if you're planning on coupling it with a dedicated GPU. If not, go for the A6.

i actually had a Phenom II BE but a old old model from around 07-08 not sure got second hand from my bro. how much of a performance drop will it give me with the A6 because i was thinking of adding a dedicated GPU?

By a good bit, considering that the Athlon/APU processors have no L3 cache and very little L2 cache, reducing performance. Furthermore, the Phenom is a physical quadcore, which should give it a good boost as well. Finally, the Phenom will give you an upgrade path into the FX-series later on. The only downside is that the Phenom has no iGPU, which shouldn't matter unless you don't have a GPU for it. (By no iGPU, I mean that it can't display anything without a dedicated GPU.)

Buy only the PSU. It's VERY RARE that the Motherboard also goes along with it.

I've hard 3 PSUs die on me (rubber smell + sparkling sounds) and the Mobo is still fine.

i actually thought of this but my dad wouldn't let me use one of his Psu's and i don't know where he has his spares But i would still like to upgrade this 5-6 year build

Buy an ultracheapo one, I've resisted 2 years on them and I've got a gaming-class PC, so I'm sure a normal PC will fare pretty well on it.

Now I've got a less-cheapo multirail one

I actually say ditch everything beside the RAM, HDDs, and ODD.

My reason is this, you said that PC were being slow, this indicated throttling. One common reason for throttling is VRM on the motherboard is overheating, in another word very cheap motherboard.

So a little update i found out that my psu works fine and that 3 of the motherboard's fuses went to shit on me so that save me a little. tomorrow i will be going to go to some computer shops with my dad to see if we could find a motherboard for it.

Interesting. If I was being a cowboy I might suggest to bridge the fuses (assuming they are not resettable/replaceable ones). That said whatever killed the fuses (your PSU may still be on the way out) might not be so gentle next time so that might not be ideal.

Can we swap. I am sitting at about 50/50 for PSUs taking out motherboards when they blow at this point.

After 3 years as a Tech, I've found only 1-2 mobos to be really taken out by the PSU, which is kinda the 5% of all the PSUs I've had to replace

Well that is what we were trying do but we decided to see if we can find a new motherboard.
