Hacking Should I get a Y cable for a portable hard drive on my wii?

Hey Guys,

I have a Wii U and I use a Y cable to load a portable external hard drive on the vWii to load backups. It works flawlessly. Now I also have a Wii, should I just use the regular wire that the hard drive came with to load backups? I do not want to have to get a seperate Y cable if the Wii can handle the hard drive with a standard USB Cable.

I would just like one more confirmation on this, simply because my USB Hard Drive was destroyed last time, and I just don't want to take the chance (I ordered a Y cable just in case)

it's based on the hard drive itself, my maxtor requires the y-cable, my seagate just requires the basic single port cable.

It's better safe then sorry, a Y cable doesn't have any negative effects besides limiting USB Ports, I can manage . Thanks for the feedback guys! I appreciate it.
