Well, if I ever ditch Windows and Parallels, at least I know which antivirus software to use.

McAfee also seems like a pretty swell guy.

How about just using good old Mac computers? :) Apple has our backs. If a rare virus is affecting our computers, they'll service them and roll out updates.

Macs are terrible and you should feel bad.

Nobody codes viruses for Mac's because nobody gives a damn. I mean, Mac owners are already suffering enough - they own Mac's.

So if you are already kneecapping your potential application range why not just avoid the payment and go for linux or BSD?

That said in a world where Adobe and Java exist it tends not to matter so much what your underlying OS is.

it is quite the step up from Dell. Dells deserve the terrible reputation.

Step 1) Do not buy the cheapest dell in the shop, I rate their business class stuff up there with almost anything else out there.

I fell in love with the MacOS because I had used it over the years, from when I was a little kid, then many years later in my computer course at summer camp, and then finally, in College. I know there are differences between the updates in the OS, just as Windows 8 is radically different from XP, and XP is different than 95. But still. The feel, the ideas on how the OS is designed.... I fell in love.

Linux, I used once and got extremely confused, and dual monitor setup didn't help either.

As far as Dell - I didn't order the cheapest Dell. In 2009, I ordered an Inspiron 1525 from them. After customization, it ended up costing $1200. It broke ALL the time. Hard drive failure within 7mo of owning the laptop. Keys popping off my keyboard. Not to mention, their technicians broke my computer and refused to fix it, long story. They also were sneaky little scammers. Trying to sell me a laptop battery for $125 when I got the proper model off Amazon for $30, free shipping.

Grrrrr.

Exactly. I'm not entirely sure why people are entirely willing to pay anywhere between $1000 to even $2500 for a Macbook but when it comes to buying a normal laptop, the Scrouge mindset takes over.

For the price of a Mac you can buy a PC with specs surpassing it by lightyears, fact.

You posted your post right as I was sending mine, (so you may wish to read my opinion)

but a friend of mine couldn't have said it any better.

"PCs use the newest technology which may run better, but it can't be trusted all the time because it's not as reliable. Mac computers break, but not as much, because they use reliable technology that also gets the job done."

Some of us may not need top of the line crap. Some of us just want a computer that works. Also, just a personal thing, using Windows 8 - irritates the hell out of me.

Please tell your friend that "PC" stands for "Personal Computer". A Mac is a PC - mind blown.

As for "the technology used", it is exactly the same as with other laptops - Macs and Macbooks are running on the exact same hardware as Dells, Toshibas and whatnot - the only differentiating factor is the presence of MacOS.

I'd also like to point out that nobody forces you to use Windows 8 - there's a myriad of other systems to choose from, ranging from Windows 7 to such exotic choices as Linux or BSD-family systems.

In a sense, a combination of school and Best Buy was my reason why I got Windows 8. Market availability and class time constraints. I didn't know I'd be needing it until I took that Game Development course. I couldn't wait for 7 to be shipped out, and 8 was the only thing Best Buy had in stock. I guess transportation has something to do with it as well, because it was the only store in my area carrying OS's, and I don't have a car to drive.

As far as a Mac being a "PC" - yeah yeah, I get your point. But that's what people use for Windows based computers, and I didn't feel like typing that. You know what it meant. Not only that, but somehow, I just think the build quality of Macs is far better than the piece of shit Dell I had.

Nitpick nitpick nitpick. Mumble mumble mumble. :P

I normally do not go for wikipedia but http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dell_Inspiron
"Dell's Inspiron computer product line started as a range of laptop computers targeted at the entry-level, budget,"... granted it then goes on to say "Now the Inspiron line mainly consists of mid-level computer systems." but this is still not the quality line. Generally you buy business grade or possibly as of the last few years gaming grade (though Dell actually now own alienware they can do well) or you suffer a bad laptop. This is not so bad right now when laptops have been reduced to "chuck it after a couple of years as it is just that cheap".

Hard drive failure sucks but it can happen to anybody at any point in time, also given dell do not make hard drives that probably wants to be put at the feet of the company that made the drive. It is mitigated somewhat if you pay good money for the hard drive but that is a different discussion.

On the battery issue and batteries on amazon.... no doubt the vendor official supplies are often a ripoff (batteries being among the biggest) but though I am more inclined to trust Amazon more than I am something coming out of Hong Kong it is not by an awful lot.

If there's anything I'm willing to admit about Mac's then it's that their build quality is very high, however there's a huge number of other manufacturers who are also known for their attention to detail when it comes to their products.

There's a good reason why you're using Windows on your Game Development course - there's just not a whole lot of useful tools for MacOS. There's a whole lot of video, audio and graphics editing programs for MacOS, but that's about it - nobody develops on Mac's unless it's for Mac's. The system is very "closed up" wheras Windows and Linux offer a large number of libraries to choose from, facilitating development.

MacOS is a system for the average Joe, really. Windows and Linux are jacks of all trades. It's been like this since the dawn of time, and although MacOS's situation in this department is steadily improving due to the relatively recent spike in its popularity, it still falls far behind in terms of software support.

Now this I do understand. But hey, to each their own, and I'm just going to be a Mac fangirl for the rest of my life. :D

WHAAAATTT????

I love my Mac. <3 and holy hell, it is quite the step up from Dell. Dells deserve the terrible reputation.

I worked for Dell small-medium business tech support a few years back, I know firsthand that they're unreliable as hell. Granted, they're not at bad as they used to be, but that doesn't change a thing about reputation.

I'd love to see how a die hard Mac fan would react to that :rofl2:

I'm glad that someone finally came out and said that. The whole mentality that Macs were somehow not PCs due to being "better" is a very blinded mindset that really sets me off. I built a custom desktop that has much better hardware than a Macbook pro and only cost me $1100 for everything. The same with my laptop; even the Lenovo I bought has better hardware and that only cost me $850 and hasn't had a single issue with it failing/BSODs, etc. I wish that the Apple fans would wake up and smell the coffee, Macbooks aren't somehow magically better than the computers at half the price.

Like you, I won't deny that their build quality is very good, but the price cannot be justified for the hardware as there are many manufacturers out there who are comparable in terms of build quality. Apple is like the Nike of computers, you only get them for the brand name.

F**K. I came in here expecting comments about the awesome McAfee vid, instead I get yet another "PC-MAC" bullshit argument.

I'm out :hateit:

I'm sorry, raulpica - it was all my fault. XD *snrk* (can't stop laughing maybe because it's 4am XD)

I am sorry for my irresponsible behaviour.

I will now make ammends by posting a video on how to properly install iOS 7 on your Apple devices. It has been approved by the board of Apple Geniuses. God Bless America. :yay:

So my opinion is that they could age a bit better in the future, and maybe AMD will continue improving them via drivers like they tend to do. No guarantee there but they have done it in the past. Just a feeling I have.

I think it was some newer games and probably poorly optimized PS4 or PS5 ports
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
they definitely will age better but i feel dlss might outweigh that since it looks about as good as native resolution and much less demanding

AMD could introduce something comparable to DLSS but nvidia's got a lot more experience with that

@The Real Jdbye, I could see AMD trying to pull off the CPU GPU tandem thing, would be a way to maybe close the gap a bit with Nvidia.
