Android Huluplus doesn't like that my phone is rooted

I have a Motorola Razr HD. Rooted on the latest version of jellybean.

I am a paying Hulu Plus customer with a legit account. Hulu Plus worked just fine before i rooted, but i hadnt used it for a while. Went back to use H+. I get a "Strange, something went wrong" error when the ads come up. The video plays fine, but when an ad is loaded, H+ tends to freak.

Is there a way to disguise that my phone is rooted to the Hulu app or something?

Ok, so i had an old ass version of android "adblock" that eventually went out of development, but kept doing its job on my phone... so there was nothing I could really detect there was still something working against the ads and had no idea how to stop it.

So theres some app that allows you to whitelist certain ad providers or whatever. I deleted the "recommend" ones, and Hulupus works again.

To be entirely fair, the Hulu Plus app may be the biggest pile of shit I've ever had the displeasure of using on any device. Have you tried simply uninstalling and reinstalling the app? Sometimes that can fix a veritable mountain of issues.

I dunno if you've ever used Hulu, or if that app is simply magnificent, but the ads play inside the video in a way that at least computer ad blockers can't seem to touch. Maybe the app handles them differently and they actually can be blocked. I'm curious to hear more about this, since I would actually consider Hulu Plus if there was anyway to enjoy it without ads because paying for a service just to get slightly fewer ads is fucking ridiculous.

The problem with Hulu is this: if you don't pay for it, you get ads about three times a show, as well as before the show starts. The one before the show starts is generally only around 30 seconds, but lately, Hulu has bolstered the in-show ad breaks to around two minutes a piece, with some ads that seem to actually break the video and require a refresh. If you get Hulu Plus, the ads are ever so slightly reduced, but you're essentially paying $8 a month to access more content but the same number of ads. I don't know how common this is elsewhere, but with every other video service I've used as well as sites in general, if they ask for payment, there are no ads. When I can pay for a service like Netflix for $8 a month and just sacrifice seeing the latest episodes legally for the small handful of shows I'm interested in, it leaves little incentive for the internet savvy user to bother with a sub-par service like Hulu Plus.

Not to mention that to use their app, you have to use Hulu Plus, which wouldn't be so bad if the app wasn't a steaming pile of crap. The overall rating it has received on the Google Play store is well deserved. If I have to pay $8 a month just to use the service on my mobile device of any sort, the least they could do is make an app that, I dunno, is decent? Comparing it to the likes of the Netflix app just shows that apparently those at Hulu didn't see a need to hire competent individuals to create their app.

I'm sure for some people, Hulu Plus is a great investment because they wouldn't know where to find that content elsewhere. For everyone else, it's generally best to spare yourself the pain if you know your way around Google because even at a measly $8 a month, I'd be hard pressed to say that Hulu Plus is a worthwhile investment.

Well if Pandora for Android can be patched to skip all ads and the 40 hour limit then Hulu Plus surely can be as well.

The breaking is a problem, the rest seems somewhat in line.

The premium for mobile.... it is one of the many reasons I do not bother with mobile platforms but still it seems like a reasonable thing to do.

I do not understand why adverts should not happen with a paid subscription -- a model where you pay and get less ads seems quite OK and everywhere else I can pay a premium to have better service or pay less to get a lesser product.

Apps can use various tricks to tell if a device is rooted. SkyGo in the UK is particularly good at detecting root.

I'm 75% sure all the ad-related freezing is not unique to the Android app, as I occasionally experienced it on XBOX360 and experienced it quite frequently on my main platform, Chrome/Firefox on Windows. Happens pretty much with every program longer than "a half hour" (Law & Order, 20/20, etc) but rarely have to reload (and watch ads twice as a super annoying result) on shorter shows like Pawn Stars.
I have not personally experienced the "oops, something went wrong" yet on my (edit: Rooted + CyanogenMod since Nov. 2012, latest version of jellybean) Nexus 7 but I won't have very good internet access for a while to double check (sorry)

Its just the stock one that comes with the phone. The only things ive done are root and unlock the bootloader.

maybe you should think about going back to non-root. what root apps or mods do you use?
