Ok first off, I don't know how many times this has been posted but I can never seem to find the answer for my problem even though I have been researching for days and maybe months so
1. Can the wii model rvl-001 play backups with DVD-R
2. If it can then what am I doing wrong
I am aware that red wii's aren't able to play DVD-R but someone told me that usually all rvl-001 should be able to play them. If that's true then I think my problem is either my wii's ios or mios. I have limited knowledge on this so I would really appreciate someone's help.

1 Wii model rvl-001 doesn't mean anything. They're all rvl-001 aren't they?
EDIT: The Family Edition with no gamecube ports is rvl-101, the Wii Mini is rvl-201, but what I say in 2 is still relevant. I can't remember what year they took it out but it's been several years now.

2 Disc based backup loaders take advantage of the never finished DVD mode in the Wii Drive's Firmware that allowed it to play DVD movies at 3x speed. At some point Nintendo removed this code from the firmware of their drives ('cause it was only being used for playing burned games). All wiis from the past couple years can't play burned games without switching out their disc drive for one from an older wii.

RVL-001 reminds me of this:

So does this mean I can play backups. Do you know the year they changed the code so it would prevent you from playing backups. I know that you can play backups from hard drives but I wanna play gc backups and that never works for me

I'm sorry but this doesn't help me can I play DVD r backups and if so can someone help me find out what the problem is. If I can't then can someone tell me what year they stopped making wii's that play DVD-R and does anyone know where to get a DVD drive cheap in Australia.

They stopped around late 2009, I was fortunate enough to get one compatible, but if you want a drive that works, online is your best bet. Because your drive is too new, they were made to not read backup discs (DVD R backups)

Thanks but I'm pretty sure that I got my wii on Christmas in 2008 or it could have been 2009 because its a red Mario one, do you know if they were made in late 2009?

I've never been big on drive replacement so I'll let someone who knows more than me answer that, but if you're going to go to the trouble to replace your drive have you considered a WODE? No soldering required and installation should be similar to replacing the disc drive. Allows you to load from a hard drive and it won't have the gamecube issues you're familiar with.

DIOS MIOS has improved a lot too, but if you're dead set on a disc drive option I won't stand in your way.

It's Dios Mios I'm having trouble with my GameCube games on the hard drive don't work unless the same game is on my sd card which will only fit 1 game at a time and is really glitchy

Ok to be honest, I'm only 12 and don't know much about this stuff but
1. Isn't soft modding better than that drive key things
2. Can you use a drive key thingy when your wii is already softmodded

Damn you remind me of a younger me, i was around 12/13 when i soldered my firs modchip into my psx.

Try grabbing dios mios lite (google) and download the version for running games from hdd.

Also after you install that download pimpmywii 3.01 and slect the first option, it will make sure you have all required ios's and mios.It will install anything youre missing.
