Hey guys, I've been out of the Wii scene since late 2008 and I've noticed that lots has changed since then. I've done a lot of reading over the past 36 hours and have seen mixed answers. Here it goes.

I have a hard moded Wii with Wiikey installed, system menu 3.4U, bootmii installed and HBC 1.1.2 installed. I want to know the best method of updating my Wii from 3.4U to 4.1U. From what I've read, 4.1U gives you the latest features while 4.2U and 4.3U were released strictly to combat homebrew, hacking, etc. I've read something about using dop-mii, but I'm not sure. Can someone please give me more info and point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance!!

P.S. I'd like to download the Netflix channel but the Wii Shop channel asks me to update to the latest update (no thanks). I'd also like to block system updates from game discs.

Install ModMii and use it to create a custom guide for installing everything. You are right not to install 4.2+. It's just anti-homebrew crap.
I've never used Modmii, is it self explanatory? While creating this guide is there anything I should be careful with? Any dos and dont's? Don't want to brick the Wii and want this to go as smooth as possible.

Yes, it's self explanatory. Just answer the questions it gives you, and it will create a guide for you, including videos.
Thanks, I used ModMii and was successful. I'm now running 4.1U, I'm able to access the shop channel/download Netflix and I was able to install Priiloader to block updates. The only issue I'm running into right now is not being able to launch the HBC through Bootmii anymore. When I click on the icon to launch HBC from BootMiimy screen goes blank --fortunately I can still launch it from the regular Wii menu. Any idea on why I can't launch from Bootmii anymore? I want to make sure it works in case in the future I needed to launch it from there. Thanks in advance.

You need to reinstall Bootmii. It's trying to load an older version of the homebrew channel that you no longer have.

Ok, easiest way of doing this? Should I just launch the hackmii installer to uninstall bootmii and then reinstall it? Do I also need to uninstall HBC and reinstall it (I've already tried uninstalling HBC and reinstalling with no luck).

I noticed this started happening as soon as I formatted my SD and copied all the files that Modmii created for me.

Just run the hackmii installer and install bootmii again. It will overwrite itself. Might be a good idea to make a new nand backup afterwards.

EDIT: Maybe you do have to uninstall it before it will let you reinstall it. If it lets you install it without uninstalling it you won't hurt anything.

Thanks man, I uninstalled bootmii, reinstalled it and HBC launches fine now! All is good now! Last question, why do you recommend I make another NAND backup? If I make a new one will it be any different than the one I created when I was still on 3.4U?

Well if you run into a problem and need to restore then wouldn't you want to restore to 4.1? I wouldn't delete the 3.4 one but it might be nice to have a dump of it in this condition.

EDIT: To be clear, a NAND dump is a complete copy of your Wii's internal memory (your wii's unique information, wii system files, your game saves, any installed channels, miis, ...) so a new NAND backup would be very different than the old one.

Thank you for clearing that up, makes total sense now. Well, it seems that I accomplished my original goal in modding/updating my Wii. Thank you rooskie54 and joostinonline for the much needed help. :grog:
