"I've developed a new fuel which is easy and cheap to manufacture and minimizes pollution to such a negligable level it's not even worth mentioning! It's greener than electric cars!"
"Great! This is beneficial to all of us, share your findings, oh wise one!"
"No, no, no - it stays in my drawer - I'm sure that anyone who's interested will come up with something like this eventually. If I share my info, somebody might use it in a malicious way, for example as fuel for tanks. I'm a pacifist, I can't let that happen."

The Wii U hack doesn't actually enrich somebody's life or bolster the economy like that or something, which is why my metaphors are decidedly-different than yours.

This is not "It will be helpful to the earth", it is "I personally want it". Also, Calvin totally took your approach years ago.

But if the world economy revolves around traditional fuel extraction, refinement and distribution and you introduce a game changer like that would it not cause troubles for a lot of people?

People have plucked tech demos/school projects out and fleshed them out a bit to make them a full game, mods have being doing all sorts of things for some time and shareware was a thing in the 90's. I am going to have to suggest you revise your games industry model, of course you could argue that several of those things having been going on for years now make them traditional but err.... fight me now.
