Nintendo sued over WaraWara Plaza (trademark related)

Japanese Media reported yesterday that Nintendo got sued got sued by Restaurant chain operator Monteroza.

Montezora, who has a chain of izakaya (Japanese-style pubs), claims that WaraWara Plaza is too similar to his Wara-wara chain of izakaya. He has filed a request with the Patent Office to have Nintendo’s trademark registration revoked.

Nintendo on its side say that they filled the trademark without any problems and that they was unaware of the izakaya chain.

Monteroza trademarked its name in romanised English as WARAWARA in 2009. Nintendo itself romanises the word as “WaraWara” and trademarked it as such last year.

Montezora also accused Nintendo of other things like decreasing the brand value.

The WaraWara Plaza is the main screen in the Wii U's OS

This same year Nintendo Lost a 3DS Patent Lawsuit to a former Sony Veteran.

It's pretty much a given that someone would sue over a name. Ever wonder for example why Apple has been to court over trademarks?

Warawara(わらわら） is an onomatopoeic word which means something along the lines of bustling/shuffling. They're basically trying to monopolize a commonplace word in a way that prevents others from ever using it in any combination.

It is exactly as silly as Apple suing a fruit store that sells apples for having a reference to apples in their store name.
