The final seconds of an American 747 civilian cargo jet's disastrous takeoff from Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan Monday — resulting in a crash that killed all seven crewmembers — were apparently captured by a dashboard camera. In the video, the aircraft is seen in a steep climb, until it fails to gain altitude and plummets into the earth.

The dashcam video shows the cargo jet, reportedly loaded with military vehicles, slowing in its ascent before making an excruciating turn toward the ground, where it burst into a fireball. The footage was posted at the LiveLeak website, which then had trouble with its servers. A copy was posted on YouTube.

I mean... it's fortunate that it wasn't a passenger load, that it was carrying military equipment and that only seven people were killed in the accident, but it's still terrible. I have a strong set discomfort of flying - you can get me on a plane, I will fly places if need be, but something is very unsettling flying above 30,000 feet at speeds near or over 600 mph. This video, regardless of the fact that it is holding military vehicles instead of suitcases, serves to further affirm my discomfort.

What makes it worse for me is that a month or two ago I had a dream very similar to this except I was on the run way when it happened. Terrifying as hell.

I'll probably continue to fly, when the need arises. I try to avoid it if ever possible as it is, which is why I drive the 8 hour drive to visit my girlfriend in Pittsburgh rather than take an hour and fly there. It's a little cheaper, too. But please don't put me on with military cargo.

It looks to me like the plane stalled (speed drops to below safe level, causing no lift at all). Plane stalling usually points to pilot error and/or mechanical failure.

This appears to have happened 2 months ago.

Also, it sounds like this guy runs over a dog at 1:33.

Quoting the source -

The dashcam video includes a time stamp of 2013/02/01 — but that could have many explanations, including a lack of continuous power to the unit.

It's believed that the cause of the crash was cargo shifting causing the aircrafts center of gravity to move back, that combined with an unforeseeable gust of wind and a steep take off angle made the situation uncontrollable. This wouldn't have happened with a passenger 747 it seems.

Oh and I wouldn't have said anything either, not because of the state of shock, but because I don't say anything unless someone is with me and can hear me. I'm not one to speak to myself, in my mind however I would go all "OMGSHITTWF!!?".

I've got two horribly inappropriate puns for the situation. I think I'm going to save them for now. Too soon.

I love how the Taliban immediately took responsibility for the crash. I know they're trying to make a point but that's just pointless fucking around at that point.

Hmm... cargo is supposed to stay still. So maybe someone was sleeping on the job instead of securing the cargo.

I prefer driving over flying.
However, If I ever do come to the US/Asia then yeh, plane it be.
Not that I'm scared of crashing, I just love driving~

Dogs in the car probably. I think he's just trying to grab it before it jumps out or something which explains the yelp.

Its saddens me seeing things like this.
