HI Guys

Already started working on HB the ps2, started a thread on the ps2 section.

But wanted to check if the ps3 can be HB and worth getting one (for another room in the house for the wee man)

some questions which will answer and make my mind up if worth getting.

1. Like the ps2 - will the ps3 be able to play ps3 iso discs?

2. if not are they HDD games only?

3. Which ps2 do I need - is it ps2 60gb or any others?

4. I won't be going online with it - if that help (wee man won't be allowed to)!

5. can it play ps2/ps1 iso discs?

Grateful for any help or might check if the xbox/360 is easier and cheaper to do.

Thanks in advance

keep up the good work

Backups can be played from the internal or external HDD. There are even ways to run PS1 and PS2 ISOs now.

You need a PS3 older than March 2011, basically a fat or a 2k slim (not all 25xx). 3k slims and 4k super slims cannot be jailbroken.

Also, you have to make sure the console is on OFW 3.55 or below to be able to install CFW. If it meets the criteria above and is new, you're fine but if it's used and has been upgraded to OFW higher than 3.55, you need a hardware flasher to downgrade it to 3.55 before you can install CFW.

To confirm, if I pick up a old phat on the cheap on the bay and meet the above specs or downgrade it to 3.55, there will be ways to play iso games.

But just the one thing you mentioned ps1/2 iso - can i play ps3 isos on it or is that not possible?

Not a big fan of the hdds and prefer discs,

but the main thing is that looks like the older fat ps3 work.

That's right, but it's better to find one on or below 3.55 because downgrading can be a pain in the a$$ and requires installing a chip inside your PS3.

Regarding ISOs, everything has to be played from the HDD, even PS1 and PS2 ISOs. Afaik, only earlier BC PS3s can play PS2 games from the disk.

Believe me you wouldn't want to play PS3 games from burned disks because PS3 games are Blu-ray and burning Blu-ray disks is going to be expensive. It is much easier to play them off your HDD.

If you want it purely for backups, you could go the Cobra ODE way once it's released. Supposedly it works on all consoles from Phat to Slim and SuperSlim. Otherwise get a <3.55 OFW device or a console with CFW installed. Restrictions apply to all newer models of the console in regards to hacking.

Once (and if) it's released and supposedly it works on all consoles...
Just like I said. I never said it's going to be released, but if the guy hasn't bought a console yet, if it's just for backups and the ODE is released soon, might as well wait a while.

But alas, getting a CFW console is the easiest way to go. No worries about the OFW version and such.

Tbh, I would rather get one on OFW <=3.55 because I would install CFW on it myself and know which CFW I have installed.

If you get one already on CFW, you wouldn't know its history, which CFW it's on, which CFWs it has been on, if it's been downgraded, if it's been dehashed... so there might be a risk of getting into problems...

Thanks guys

I think I am getting the hang of this, so if I go for a ps3 fat version like a 40gb or 60gb I should be ok, and stick to a hdd to play it save.

I have been toying with this or the xbox 360 and can't decide as its for the wee boy who is 7, its for games only and no online crap.

isos i am used to with the wii softmod from here (thanks).

Ps3 came as the first choice as i will be getting a few ps2 iso for the ps2

and the ps3 in another room (3 rooms so want something in each room wii, ps2, ps3/xbox360, so not bored when the kids are fighting)

if the xbox 360 is easier i could go for that for isos

tough choices man, great advice by the way.

I think the PS3 would be easier to mod because it's a soft mod (unless you're downgrading). Afaik, any X360 mod requires opening your console.

If you go for a fat PS3 you would be OK as long as it's on OFW 3.55 or below. If it's a used console and has been upgraded by the user to OFW higher than 3.55, you will have to downgrade it with a hardware flasher.

Also, if you can find a 20xx or 21xx slim on OFW 3.55 or below, it would be better than fats because slims are more reliable.
