I'm 20 years old and I just knew her by name, and by nickname. I really didn't know what she did, and that she was so unpopular with a lot of people....
Really didn't know anything about her, still don't know much, but I did learn in various TV journals that she was incredibly harsh on some part of the (Northern?) population of England, and she would rather buy coals from foreign countries, than from those people.
That really says something, wow..... Not a good point IMHO.

It's an impossibly difficult question to answer because someone like Thatcher (like Thatcher, not specifically her) was needed at the end of the 70's because the Trade Unions were effectively controlling the country and hamstringing the economy. The UK needed someone to make difficult and potentially divisive decisions so control rested with the government and not with well paid figureheads for worker groups. Thatcher's government closed down fewer coal mines than the preceding labour governments and yet that point is consistently used against her.

Ultimately she did a lot of good things but as with any figure in power, a lot of questionable things too. She was certainly a player on the world stage unlike following PM's and didn't kowtow to anyone (unlike the Blair/Bush "partnership") The difficulty in answering your question properly is that there are probably only a couple of people on the forums who are old enough to remember the effects of her government, and whilst i was alive for the time she was PM i have no real impression of it.

PS - UK should go Communist....

I wasn't actually born for her time in power but from what I've learnt about her it depends on your Class and the job you had whether you love or hate her, as said above a lot of people who worked in the mining industry and their families have a lot of bad feelings for her a she started was involved in the process of closing down the mines, I'm unbiased towards her but no matter what she did and didn't do all though I find it disgusting that the government spent so much money on her funeral , especially in the economical climate we are facing at the moment.

Thank you. A lot like Regan on how he handled union strikes.
See, if someone is doing this for the good of the country without any other interests, i highly respect them because Unions (or other subjects related to the good of the country) do more harm nowadays than help.
But when someone is a bitch to Wall Street and tries to do these things he is just a hypocrite. A cute hypocrite.

I could go long but generally speaking the joke was you will be hard pressed to find anybody that voted for her today* (well I do not know what goes today as people dying has a funny effect on things).

*someone prepping to tell me about the UK electoral system you might as well spare yourself.

My main memory of 'owd Maggie' was the teachers jumping for joy when she resigned as PM - I was in high school at the time... Full grown men dancing about! And that's generally about it, with me being 37yo I'm one of he oldest on here too...

Listening to mum is similar to what xist said, though perhaps not half as nice as he put it: basically 99% of people outside London absolutely fukkin hated her, and we're still seeing the problems she's caused, but like has been said, you can't deny she put the 'Great' back in Great Britain..... Unions needed taking a down a peg, though it can be said she took them down a good few pegs too many... poll tax, privatizations all over the place....
For those not in the know, Wizard of Oz song 'Ding Dong the Witch is Dead' reached number 2 in the UK charts last week: something I find both hilarious and a bit harsh all at the same time!
