So, what's so influential about a man who created one game?
Hi Mr. LivesUnderARock. :P

Notch showed that with no budget, no commercials, no advertising, no FMVs or voice-acting... just one fat Swedish guy could make a game that took the world by storm. Minecraft has sold 10 million copies on the PC alone, not factoring in iOS, Android, and 360 sales. This is influential because it's a market that was previously dominated by big-name companies, where small independent developers got little to no attention. Minecraft was the first big indie hit, and got so popular it's now being published on previously-closed platforms, namely iOS and the 360.

Also inb4 a storm of people that don't know what "influential" means.

I think its that he created a game that was simple in concept but insanely more fun than 90% of games around and he did it without being Nintendo or Sony or Microsoft. Inspiring to any average game developer around that they too just need 1 good idea and they could get rid of the "ahh another Call of duty game, that sounds ilke a great idea" way of thinking.

I own the game, and I enjoy it. There are just so many better choices for a more influential game developer in my opinion, like Miyamoto or Sakurai or something.

He also showed us that it's entirely possible to be more pretentious than Stanley Kubric and that you can convince the entire world that "You know better" because you made one Indie game based on voxels ergo you know everything about voxels.

By the way, the list is pretty silly. What's Kim Dotcom doing there on 3rd place? He influenced nothing - he just got shafted hard, if you want to put someone defending freedom of filesharing on the list, put The Pirate Bay staff there.

Psy is 7th on that list? Ok so much for the credability of that list, i enjoy that song as much as the next person but looking at the rest of the list and the people he's higher than, people with genuine achivements. Rediculous.

You know I heard Henry Ford was actually not very agreeable either.

inb4 "So what"?
So what?

Why would you put those police-dodging foreigners on there?

See look, I can bring up shit too. <3

The games industry? Sure, I could see that argument. I don't like Notch myself, but Minecraft made an undeniably big splash.

In the world?

But it's an online poll. Accuracy/validity kind of go out the window.
But yeah, online poll means it's the online generation that votes.

Why are you trying to say that the "Online Generation" cannot distinguish between "people who made a fun game" and "people who substantially influenced the world, shaping the reality we live in" which would entail that it's seriously lacking both knowledge and the understanding of how the real world works?

...and why are you right? :tpi:

Well it also involves people who, when they see mention of somebody they personally dislike, make sure to point out their personal character flaws without being asked or it being mentioned at all.

*cough*

Also I can't seem to find that one call of duty or whatever video where the guy's playing like a 10 year old and the kid's trying to trash talk him with shit like "get a weal gun!"

I just seriously think that Notch's achievements don't really validate his presence on this list. Heck, George W. Bush "achieved" more - his agressive policies againts terrorism led to the overthrowing of several regimes, regardless of whether we like these decisions or not - he made an actual impact. Notch made a game about Lego blocks that pretends not to be about Lego blocks and on top of that, he didn't exactly make the game all on his own - Minecraft truly became fun when other coders and artists joined the development team.

EDIT: And just so it's clear, I'm actually againts interventionism of the U.S, I was merely underlining the gap between what's apparently considered "an achievement".

I'm pretty sure that I'm free to express my opinion about Notch's character - in a way, it's an achievement of sorts, y'see. :P
I'm just saying making posts with character attacks and such when the subject (his personality) wasn't even being discussed... that's just plain childish. Don't act like GBATemp, act like Foxi. Have some manners like you used to, please.

Rydian, you're nearing the levels of pretentiousness rivaling only Notch, has your sense of humor fuse burn out? Chill. ;) I wasn't even insulting him, I was making an observation - everybody knows he's pretentious, it's just a trait of his character, no biggie.
