Welcome to the GBAtemp Tetris Tournament!
ynUEtBJ.jpg

First of all, I would like to thank everyone who registered for the tournament. You guys are great, and you're the ones who make things like this possible. In this thread, I'm going to tell you how everything will work, and instruct you on how to do everything you are required to do. Please read this thread carefully and check it frequently. There is very important information in here, and if you just skim over it you might miss something and get yourself or your group disqualified or miss the tournament altogether. That being said, let's get down to business.

Rules

1. No cheating. Cheating in this game, as I understand it is somewhat difficult, but even if it wasn't, there is no way you can cheat without being completely obvious about it. So don't do it. If you do, you will be barred from this and all future GBAtemp contests, events, drawings and tournaments for life or until we feel sorry for your cheating butt.

2. Premium items or abilities besides those that are entirely cosmetic (block skins, backgrounds, etc...) are entirely and completely prohibited. If you are found using them, it will be considered cheating, and the above punishment of rule #1 will be applied. If you find you can't disable a premium item or power, you will be required to create a new Tetris Friends account and play the tournament with that. This includes control styles. Use the default control style ONLY. (To clarify, you still may use a USB controller if you have one, but you will need to configure it with a program like joy2key)

3. A group leader will be chosen by the group prior to round start. The Group Leader's duty will be to create the room according to instructions provided below and provide the link to the room to the rest of the group members. The link to the room is only to be provided by PM to avoid people who do not belong in the room to join it. If these duties are not met, or the group leader is a no-show a new leader will be appointed by the group at the last minute and will be given additional time to complete their round.

4. Each group will be given 60 minutes to complete their round from the scheduled start time. Group leaders are required to give everyone in the group 10 minutes to join the room from the scheduled start time. If people have not joined after 10 minutes of the scheduled start time, the group leader may choose to start the round OR discuss with the group whether or not to wait. Please be aware that whatever decision you make, you still only have 60 minutes total to start, complete and post a screenshot of the end of the round results.

5. Each member of the group is required to post a screen shot of the end of round results. Though I only need one, it's best for everyone to share the responsibility so there is no finger pointing when no one provides a screen shot. If at least one screen shot is not provided by the group, the entire group will be disqualified, and no one will move on to the next round.

6. In each group, only the 1st place winner will move on to the next round.

7. If for any reason you disconnect in the middle of a round, by default you are disqualified. It doesn't matter if your router spontaneously combusted. It's the only fair way to do this. If EVERYONE in the group decides to redo the round and nullify the results of the previous round to include the disconnected player(s), only the redo of the round will count. All other rules still apply in this instance, though I must reiterate, the decision MUST be unanimous.

8. Each group will be given a thread in a special subforum just for this tournament. This thread should be used to organize the round, and get everyone gathered in one place to discuss it. The link to the room the group leader provides is NOT to be posted in your group's thread.

9. Chances are, that before this tournament is over, I will have to make a hard decision that will piss someone off no matter what. Please be understanding of that before you decide to insult me and call me every name in the book. My word is final, but my decision will always be as fair as possible. Abuse to me other others in your group can in will lead to warns, bans, and/or disqualification from other events.

10. All rules of the forum still apply to this tournament and extend to the chat window within the game itself.

How it all works

If you are not the group leader, all you need to do is copy and paste the code into your web browser and wait for everyone else to join in.

If you ARE the group leader, please refer to this infographic album I have provided for you: http://imgur.com/a/6r5rn
Even if you are NOT the group leader, please take the time to read this in case your appointed Group Leader is a no show.

What's the stance on holding blocks? It's always seemed like cheating to me, at least. But it is part of the game no, so..
Also, how are you picking the group leaders? I'm assuming seniority.

Holding blocks is fine since its an ability everyone has. And assigning the group leader will be done by the group. I have no part in that.

Are there alternate rotation systems in Tetris Friends or are you just limited to the default controls?

I certainly hope it's the first one.

Just a little clarification time question :

When you say we're supposed to go by PST I assume you're talking about "Pacific Standard Time" (UTC-8)
BUT
timeanddate.com informs me that that time zone currently doesn't exist because those areas are currently in "Pacific Daylight Time" (UTC-7) because of daylight savings time. (PDT)
http://www.timeanddate.com/library/abbreviations/timezones/na/pst.html

There's also another PST that's "Pitcairn Standard Time" and is also UTC-8
http://www.timeanddate.com/library/abbreviations/timezones/pacific/pst.html

The point is should I calculate the correct time based on UTC-7 or UTC-8 ?
if it helps to judge by comparing the time of this post, my time zone is UTC-6 and I'm making this post at 10:11pm.

It should be UTC-7 since everyone on Pacific Time observes DST. There are some places in other timezones that don't observe DST though.
(also, I guess I'm UTC-6 because of DST)

Yes, this. Even though we observe DST, we never call it Pacific Daylight Time. All year every year, it's always Pacific Standard Time. it might not be accurate, but it's still the preferred nomenclature.

Does the no alternate control styles mean we can't change the buttons? I much prefer down arrow and up arrow both being rotate, but in different directions and mapping the drop to some other key entirely.

Confused about this as well. But I think it means we can't change the advanced style settings such as Delayed Auto Shift and Auto Repeat Rate and must reset this to setting one if we unlocked the other ones.. Which is a shame since this is what allows for fast game play and you will see no pro performances in this tournament with those settings banned. You cannot play fast at the default DAS/Autorepeat settings...

Also, yes my name is spelled wrong.

The problem with those settings is that you need to pay coins to unlock them, so people who have not played this game before wouldn't be able to play fast, giving old players a pretty large advantage.

Yep, I'm aware. I've already changed my settings back to the default and practiced a little bit, it effectively cuts my performance in half. 40 lines takes about double time with default settings.

Well I hope everyone will honor the rules, but there's not really a way to check it I guess.. A screenshot of your game settings wouldn't prove a thing since it can easily be changed. If someone is suspected of cheating one would have to take a detailed look of the replay. But I don't think replays are available during live arena games.
