This was the color I was greeted to when I opened up the XL today that I bought on Saturday from Target. I haven't read much about it, but from what I did read, people have mentioned the following...
1) It is a defect
2) It'll clear in a couple of days
3) It is not a defect
Even with people saying it is a defect, it seems Nintendo will not repair it because they believe it isn't a defect. Now, I'm rather in a rush to decide what to do about this, because I have my old 3DS listed on eBay (because I only need one). I haven't transferred my stuff to the XL, but I need to do it before my auction ends in 1 day (though as of this moment, there are no bids). My question is what do XL owners understand about this. Is it a defect? If so, should I attempt to get a replacement? I got it at Target last Saturday before the deal ended. If I should get a replacement, how should I go about with it? A different one may have the yellow tint as well. I'm not one to trouble people or companies, as the thought of asking them to go through as many XLs as possible to find one without the yellow tint bothers me.

NOTE:
In the picture, the camera is masking theyellow tint a bit, but I will say this. It seems to mainly be affecting the top screen of the XL, as after examining the Settings section on both the original 3DS and XL, the corner areas of the bottom screen in comparison to the aligned areas on the top show that they just about match on the original 3DS, but have a bit of difference on the XL.

Sorry for the big-ass picture...

Well, from the looks of things, if we're gonna nit pick, i'd actually say your regular 3DS has a purple tint.
You heard it first here.
Can't be unseen.
Have fun with that. ^_^

Based on what I know, when Nintendo made the initial price cut, all 3DS units were made with a cheaper screen to make up for this cost, causing all newer models to have this yellow tint. The XL model was made in the same way, so all XL models (to my understanding) have this yellow tint. Its not a defect, its just Nintendo saving a few bucks to make its product more affordable.

Makes me glad I got an ambassador 3DS without the issue. I mean I'd love to have an XL sized 3DS, but sucks that none of them (as far as I know) have the image quality without the yellow tint of the initial 3DS units that shipped before the price cut.

do you have any proof of this duffmann? i've got both an ambassador 3DS and a 3DSXL purchased a couple weeks ago, i've noticed no lack of "Image quality". after close comparison of the two in the settings screen, what DiscostewSM says it somewhat true, that the original 3DS appears whiter at the settings screen, but it's actually the same color, but the color just appears more vibrant on the XL hence the more yellow. this issue is really only seen on the status screen itself. all areas that are meant to appear white are completely white, like in the normal home screen, and in games.

By image quality I only meant the yellow tint effects the image. Not that the quality is scaled down or anything like that. As for proof, I've only read many people talk about it and everyone says the same thing, so this is all as far as I know.

However, I would point you to a site like this to examine how the yellow tint affects games, its hard to notice, but it is nonetheless noticeable:

Source? I'm comparing my purple 3ds with my brother ambassador 3ds right now and I don't see any difference, both of them have the same white tint.

Its not something that can be confirmed, Nintendo will never admit to it. But if you ask Nintendo about it, they say that this falls in the norm for 3DS models, and is not something to be fixed. I see many pages mention it as a rumor though, such as here: http://3dsforums.com/questions-answers-40/nasty-yellow-top-screen-now-norm-43609/

the quote is, "It seems to be the norm with the 3DS and 3DS XL after the price drop. In fact there was a rumor suggesting that Nintendo was using cheaper screen on later models of the 3DS. The yellow tint is supposed to go away after awhile too."

Thing is, this makes a lot of sense. There weren't any reports of yellow tinted screens when the 3DS initially was released, after the price drop it became an issue, and it seems to be an issue with just about every XL I see reported. Though some claim it goes away over time. I question this, but it could be true.

Make sure you have "Power saving" off as it changes the color to... well... save power. (And it actually looks like that)

Eh, I had this problem after I sent my 3DS back for repairs, it doesnt quite disappear, but fades a bit after a while. also its extremely easy to get used to, I was freaking out when I first saw it and emailing Nintendo like crazy, after about a week of not looking at my 3DS in disgust I opened it and didnt even give a shit all of the sudden.

Well, for the little time I have right now, I'm going to do what one of the staff at NintendoLife suggests......actually test some games to see if the problem is really that serious. It is mainly that Settings page that shows off a lot of yellow compared to other places like the Home menu, so maybe I'm just being paranoid.

And actually DiabloStorm, you could very well have a point. I have had my old 3DS for 2 years now, so it could just be I'm so used to it that anything different is considered bad. It might be that my old 3DS's screens are more washed out, an in the spot where I took the picture, the page is meant to be yellow, but my old 3DS doesn't make it as vibrant.

3DS on the right is how the graphics should looks, 3DS XL on the left is what the yellow tint does:

Its probably something people can get over, but it is indeed not how the 3DS is meant to look, the original model is not being "washed out"

I had an XL repaired under warranty and the top screen came back with a yellowish tint. Luckily the replacement screen did not fix the unit and they replaced the whole thing on the second attempt. The replacement had clear screens.

Black text? Post ignored.
You know, you could have asked me to fix it (which I did) instead of increasing your post count with such a rude comment, because some of us use the default style type, and don't realize that formatting can be affected when it looks fine with the default.

Yellowish screen?
Huh? Well i don't see them on my XL.
I tried to take a pic with my cam and i do see the yellowish tint on the pic but don't see it while i am playing or watching any of the screens.
But i know that the home screen of MK7 online has yellowish colour.
The things that are white are lil yellow.
