I've got my hands on a PS2, and I would like to pirate games on it. Doesn't matter if it's by DVD or via HD.

I've got these specs, which I'm pretty sure will help.
Sony model no. SCPH-39004
Playstation 2 PAL
AC 220 - 240V 50/60Hz 50W
Serial C6589125

I haven't seen the firmware version, because I currently have no screen to hook it up too.... Can someone help me out?

Well if someone near u have a softmodem/hardmoded PS2 then you can easily install FreeMC Boot and play from HDD,DVD or SMB.

FMCB + HDD adapter ftw <3

I'd got for FMCB.
It's better then a hardmod cause it gives you a menu to execute homebrew etc
Along with various settings.

You're always going to need some media to play the games from, ranging from (depending on system) a hard drive, external drive, flash drive/sd card, or optical disk media.

You're also usually going to need something to transfer the mod to the system with.

Wii - SD card/hdd after that
DS - flash cart
Xbox 360 - something to flash the DVD drive with, then disk media after that OR ODDE
PSP gets away with it, only needing a MS Pro Duo.

Edit - I mean, if you REALLY want to cheap out on it, if you have a pretty beefy computer, grab PCSX2, download your ISOs, then use a wired 360 controller, PS2 with a USB adapter, PS3 controller with a bluetooth dongle, or just mouse and keyboard that shit, yo.

SCPH-39004 is a fat model, right? As DinohScene hinted, you should try to find a network adapter, and an EIDE hard disk (these are old, and possibly hard to find now. SATA won't work). Then you can play your games off the internal hard disk, once your PS2 is exploited and you can launch an elf file. This site is still a good resource: http://www.sksapps.com/

Do you always have to buy something to pirate games? Or is there any way to be a total cheapass and not spend a dime?

Spend a couple bucks to get "backups" working or spend a lot of bucks and buy originals. Still well in cheapass territory.

Well if you pay shipping I'll softmod a memory card for you. I provide SF 2.0 or FreeMcBoot 1.8[Final]
That or do it yourself with an original copy of 007 Agent.

I've done a quick Google, and found this item. Will this do the pirating job for me :)?

Le Swap Magic 3.8 PAL CODER remplace le Swap magic 3.6

god no!

no no no no no no a thousand times no

That means the card cog eject trick known to fuck up disc trays for PS2 deffo still be a cheap ass (you will need a memory card anyways right) get someone in PAL region to sort you Free MCBoot on your memory card and ship it back and use that to enable your mods

there are no illegal games just pirated games and yes memory card method above is best.
modding is simplest.

I remember i used an external hard disk (the size for the ones for the laptop) and it was working great. some games did have issues running on it like Ratchet

FreeMcBoot it yourself; it's not that hard and it'll be far more rewarding in the end. With regards to media, well...
It's like my auto-mechanic always says:
"We offer 'Good,' 'Cheap,' and 'Fast' services...but you can only pick two."

Good and cheap is playing off a usb drive; but it'll be slow.
Good and fast is getting a network adapter card and an IDE hdd; but it won't be cheap.
Cheap and fast is playing burned games; but it won't be good*...for your PS2.

*"good" is a relative term here. Bad disc media can possibly mis-align your optical's lens and "wear and tear" on an already old system should not be disregarded. The chances for "mechanical failure" on a FreeMcBooted PS2 constantly playing burnt discs as opposed to one playing them off of a hdd should be obvious.

Well I'd rather let someone with more knowledge do it, just to be sure. I don't have any experience with hardware too, so it's only logic I'm a bit scared....
I've done a bit of searching and come across these 2 sites, which seem pretty cheap too!
http://www.pstwo.co.uk/
http://www.toveyonline.com/memorycards/freemcboot.html

Any feedback on these 2?

Thanks so much for the (quick) replies btw!

I bought mine from http://www.toveyonline.com/memorycards/freemcboot.html - It was cheap and quick delivery - most importantly of all it works great :)

I hope this helps.
