Yesterday I spotted a YouTube video for a anaglyph signal converter box which will convert 2D video into Anaglyph 3D. It seems that the cheapest box I could find on amazon was 39.99. There's one major issue. I have a tubed HDTV that only has Component, Composite and S-Video inputs. Every anaglyph converter box I have come across only supports HDMI in and output. That would mean that I would have to buy a...

- Wii to HDMI adapter 17.45
- HDMI Cable (From adapter to 3D box) 4.20
- The 3D box 39.99
- Another HDMI cable (3D out to TV) 4.20
- Finally and the part I need advice on a HDMI to Component converter
- Also...finally... Component cables 0.69

Not counting the HDMI to Component converter, all of the listed items come to $66.53 USD (priced on Amazon). If I go through with this, I really don't want to pass the 100 barrier. Something tells me that the HDMI to component converter is going to be a total bitch. What do you ladies and gents think? Also, before someone goes on a use Dolphin tangent, Dolphin emulator is NOT an option. -just putting it out there :P

even if you don't like it dolphin is simply your only option for real 3D

I know that Dolphin offers better options. I dont hate Dolphin. I'm just not going to take over my Wife's PC when I have a perfectly capable Wii and the will to make this work as long as the HDMI to Component converter doesn't kick me in the ass.

One upscaling operation, one signal conversion operation done in cheap hardware + faux 3d generated on best guess with cheap hardware. You might get some kind of "3d" out of the rig, but the end result will be totally not worth the effort, sorry.

problem is the Wii is not "perfectly capable" of 3D output
all it can put out is 2D, the real depth information is lost at that point

2D to 3D upscaling suffers from same problem as as all other kinds of upscaling
whatever is added is simply guesswork at its core
they might be educated guesses but they still can and will be totally wrong if their assumptions are violated

if you have money to burn go ahead, but if you don't do yourself a favour and demo it before buying
Its extremly dependent on device and content used

I would watch out for problems with:
fast content: ghosting
comic/abstract style: object recognition
perspective unusual(anything that's not a level camera showing "ground" at the pictures bottom, e.g. upside down, top down, space sim) : object placement
flying/hovering objects: object placement

Buy the anaglyph box first and see how it looks on a regular TV show before buying everything else.
won't work

Afaik he kinda needs the rest to actually connect the upscaler to his TV

A regular tv show is exactly what the box is made for
You don't want to test the best case

One other thing to take into account is lag. All that conversion will take some amount of time and will add up. Your controls may become WAY out of sync with whats displayed on the screen.

Won't be worth it.
What you get in the end may be called 3D, but it probably won't be a very enjoyable experience.
Not to mention anaglyph 3D is rather painful to look at, but besides that, the depth will be completely incorrect.

Remember, just because your TV is 50" or bigger, that doesn't make it an HDTV.

The way you describe it, you're confusing giant with HD. Every HDTV has some sort of HD input, and 720i doesn't count.

I've come to the conclusion that I will Just get one of the 3D converters and test it out with OnLive and videos. If all goes well then I'll move forward to getting all of the items to make it work for Wii. @Fishman P. I DO have a CRT HDTV. Yes, they are extremely rare and was lucky to score one off craigslist. I'm all about optimal Wii usage so I was going to hunt the ends of my city for one of these babies, if I had to take it that far :P The annoying part is that my TV model... I can barely find any info on it. Hell, even Phillips took the damn instruction booklet off their website :/ (da fuq!). I can only guestimate that this TV handles 720p greatly but maxes out at 1080i. Also, I'm guessing that these component inputs are of the digital variety considering that I'm able to get the 480p resolution form my Wii. First time I ever tried component on a Wii was with a TV without digital component. Thanks to a call to Nintendo, I learned a nice little lesson on that :P

Uh, Wii component output is definitely analog? :D And component input with three connectors on monitors/TV's is definitely analog as well :)

Technically you could create a plugin that would reside in the Wii's memory and work in the background or modify an IOS to display games in 3D, similarily to PSP 3D but nobody really thought of doing this.

I can tell you right now do not bother, it will look like shit
these boxes were made mainly for 3d source content meant for 3dtv's (3d blu-rays, and 3d compatible games)

I own one of these "magic" 3d converters (3d video wizard to be exact) while it works great when you feed it 3d content, 2d to 3d looks like absolute trash, you wont see any 3d and I got a headache within 5 mins while I can play/watch for hours using normal 3d content

Apparently, someone was crafty enough to enable stereoscopic 3D via a gecko code for F Zero...

http://veclabs.posterous.com/pages/stereo-3d-for-gamecubewii

I wonder if Stereoscopic and anaglyph modes could be coded within the multiple USB loaders. -Just food for thought :P
I'm the author of that hack. It should be portable to most 60fps GameCube/Wii games with some effort. Anaglyph should work fine if you use Stereoscopic Player. I'm actually in the middle of recoding that hack to fix some glitches, make it easier to port to new games, and support more camera features (head tracking would be pretty cool). I don't have an ETA for release though; I'm pretty busy these days.

Thanks biolizard89 for dropping by! I have a feeling that this thread will heat up sometime this year. Hopefully on Friday, I can start the first phase of my project. I've selected a 3D box and will give a review once it comes in (the week after, if all goes well). I like how amber/blue (the 3D used by these boxes) magenta/green and inficolor (reverse magenta/green) have a better chance of giving you the best color accuracy. Last night I watched "Clash of the Red Rangers" in red/cyan via WiiMC. Not bad but if I can get a better color experience with amber/blue, then I'm all in!
