worst idea ever!

i have purchased the new castlevania game for the 3ds through the eshop yestarday, and i am still waiting for it finish downloading... 24 hours have passed and its still at 85%
its not like i have a slow connection because i have 30 mbp/s
its not like i had problems with the internet as i was most of the time surfing
its not like i the 3ds had low battery as it was connected to the charger the whole time
its not like i played with the 3ds, it was the whole time in sleepmode
its not like the router is far from the 3ds... its in the same room

so what gives? am i the only one experiencing this or is it just nintendo which is still a baby when it comes to digital distribution?

is that even posible? i think the moment i hit the stop button will have to start from the beginning

also its not like its stuck... it goes up every now and then... but still 24 hours...
Games are only downloaded either directly in the eShop or during Standby mode (when you close your 3DS). They are not downladed while you play a game or browse through the 3DS menu.
I have downloaded 2 retail games while one took ~20 minutes and the other ~40.

I have a somewhat related question and, coincidentally, I was gonna buy the same game the OP bought. If you buy the cartridge/physical version of the game can you download it onto your 3DS/SD card via the eshop or somewhere so that you don't have to carry the cartridge(s) around with you everywhere?

How is that behind the times? Neither Sony nor Microsoft allow it either.

What would stop you from buying the retail, getting the download, then selling the retail?

I figure they would have some system implemented to handle that, like say, idk, cartridge/console specific locking so selling it would be a non issue? Kinda like the specific game codes you get on Pokemon B/W B2/W2 (If you understand how that works. Although obviously the code wouldn't reset when you delete your save...but I digress...) That's just off the top of my head but I guess something like that is too complicated and people would complain when they try to sell their games/systems etc... worth it just so you don't have to carry crap around if you ask me...

So, anyway assuming the physical game carts have some type of identifier that differentiates them from other same-title cartridges within the hardware itself and the 3DS can flash game carts It could write to an encrypted file stored somewhere on the 3DS/SD card so that game will only work with that system.

Other than that... IDFK... :P

Edit: Either way I can already tell that isn't how this works, so, next question:

Does it then come down to personal preference whether you choose digital/physical game copy or...what? Besides the booklet and case art I don't see any point in buying physical cartridges as long as the e-shop is there, yet they aren't obsolete yet so apparently there's something? Do you not get Club Nintendo codes if you buy digitally?

Edit 2: Btw if you didn't guess, I don't have any 3DS games yet, so maybe that clears a few things up. lol All of my ds games are on my flash cart and I've just been playing those and keeping my eye on what's being released...

Edit 3: Ignoring the fact that a 3ds emulator doesn't exist yet, what's stopping anybody from buying any game, transferring the data to their pc and then selling it back? Nothing, so...same concept...

Too much trouble putting in all of those just to prevent people from cheapskating 3DS games. Easier to just make them choose to go retail or digital. They could always buy both.

Also, what's stopping people from your Edit 3 is that not everybody can transfer a 3DS retail cart to their PC. Then there's the fact that it just sits there on your PC wasting space, unless you're Neimod or some other 3DS hacker. Ergo, it's pointless. But feel free to do pointless things if that's your cuppa tea.

Well, for instance, I have my DS cartridges and cases and I could have just sold them back now that I have them conveniently on my flash cart but of course I didn't. In the end it simply comes down to convenience, Nintendo can't possibly police every single thing their customers do anyway. If my idea was implemented, personally, I'd sacrifice resell for the convenience of not having to carry cartridges, but meh.

Yeah, the Nintendo servers are slow. Though that is extremely slow, I downloaded a few demos yesterday on fast internet and it only took a couple hours at most (probably 750 MB worth of demos)

I wish. I really do wish. I prefer physical copies, but if I could also be able to access my games anywhere without having to bring them with me or swapping carts, that would be great.
It will probably happen in the future (though not with the 3DS), but who knows when. DRM is evolving all the time though, at some point they'll have a viable way of preventing piracy through converting physical copies to digital ones. Maybe they'll make the flash memory rewritable and erase it when you convert it to a digital copy? Who knows.

Take note, not everybody resells games, so it's not really an option for some, maybe most. People may think buying the retail entitles them to a digital copy, and sure, they give Nintendo flak for not giving them what they feel they're entitled to, but in the end, Nintendo's system works in their favor. If you really want that game, you'd just man up and make a decision -- retail or digital? You grumble, but then you pay, and then the game makes everything all right in the world again.

Fair enough, but as I've never bought a 3DS game yet, retail or digital, what are the differences, if any, besides what I mentioned? Like the Club Nintendo Coins thing or anything else that might not be immediately obvious. I'd have to assume that the games themselves play identically to each other. Are the files absolutely massive from the e-shop? Where do they save/would SD card read speed become a factor? etc...

No you are not the only one experiencing the fact that Nintendos online network sucks ass in speed terms. The Wii U online downloads takes forever for me. I bought Darksiders 2 on Wii U online. I've got 100Mbit up and down and yet it still takes forever to download. The fact they keep on calling shit "blocks" or whatever on the 3DS is just lame. Why o why can't you just stick with Mega Bytes like everyone else?

I think Nintendo has a bunch of things to learn from Facebook's infrastructure.
