If you have no problem buying a game online before it comes out in a store near you. Why wouldn't you just buy the different region console? I assume its the US games people buy because they tend to come out first. But that is not nearly always the case. Still if the games you buy are always US then just buy a US console in the first place and you can still buy the digital crap that you always could now you have the ability to play games purchased through eBay.

.. And then, if someone wants to buy us a game we say "Sorry, you can't get it from a normal shop, you have to order from abroad", or if Lewie Procter finds some massive amazing deal on SavyGamer, then we can't use it. When games come out earlier or exlusive to Europe, we can't play them, or games with English English text instead of American English, and we can't impulse buy a game we see for a good price in a shop, we have to wait weeks to get things delivered, and we can't get some games at a reasonable price because of the overseas delivery costs.

.. And we CAN buy UK games from eBay. It isn't just a US website.

Oh, I don't know, because getting another console just to play one or two must-have Japanese/EU games is f***ing expensive. Region locking is one of the most dick moves a company does under the pretense of "controlling sales". It's stupid, it's useless and makes people resort to hacking, which I myself have no issue with. If Nintendo was so hellbent on curtailing hacking and piracy, they would get rid of region locking. It's like someone giving a thief car keys and asking why his car was stolen. It doesn't make sense. Region locking is a draconian form of DRM (like all of it), therefore it needs to die a horrible ignominious death.

I see so you guys really do play games from all over the world. I have been a dedicated console player for years and never once did I have the inclination to want to play a foreign game in my console, nor do I know anyone of the type. You guys must be a different level of gamer then I, if you realistically desire to purchase games from Japan, and Europe, and US. Pal, NTSC, whatever.

Or maybe I am just not as well traveled I suppose it would really suck to take my gameboy on vacation to China, goto a game store and not be able to play the rarest unreleased super pokemon game. Or just the fact that I don't have the ability to do what I want with my stuff I also understand that mentality and partake in it That if I want to play super pokemon that I should be able to. However I never have wanted to, plus the game gets released in the US eventually and if you don't go on the internet you wouldn't know it was out for months anyways. region free

Yeah sure, let me just go and buy another $250 system of which I already own one.
I assume its the US games people buy because they tend to come out first.
People import games because either:
  1. It's not getting released in their country.
  2. It's cheaper.
  3. If localisation is going to take a really long time, a la Monster Hunter.
Still if the games you buy are always US then just buy a US console in the first place and you can still buy the digital crap that you always could now you have the ability to play games purchased through eBay.
Would you want to buy the same console twice just to play one game?

I cannot say for all the other guys, but in for me, your assumption is WAAAAAAY off.
I'll give an exaggerated example. Let's say you could only play games bought from the store you bought your 3DS from. That store (let's call it Store A) usually has the few games you wanted to play so it's all good. And then you later discover that some of the games are far cheaper in Store B. It's annoying because you can't play that unless you buy yet another console. Where's the logic in that? Then, you find out Store A doesn't have a few games that you want. But Store B does. Of course, you may trade your current 3DS in and get a new one but that'd render your older games useless. So you'll now end up with TWO 3DSes. Now why should I buy 2 consoles which are essentially the same thing just because of some stupid restriction placed?

And let's take it a step further. Now say there is another game from a series you really really like. But stores A and B both do NOT want to sell them because they hate the series like there is no tomorrow. You could get only get it from Store C which is a 3 hour drive away. And let's not forget that you need a Store C console. The 3 hour drive may or may not be worth it but I'd have to say the need to get yet another console is the deal breaker for me.

You see where I am going with this?

I mean, sure, you can always go buy all the consoles. I'd love to. But I'm just not in the financial position to do so. Heck, if I could I'd probably buy every colour available.

Then there's pricing. Ask any Australian gamer and they'll know what I mean.

Wait! There's more! There are also significant differences in certain games. Virtue's Last Reward for example. The NA version is dual audio while the EU only has one.

I see so you guys really do play games from all over the world. I have been a dedicated console player for years and never once did I have the inclination to want to play a foreign game in my console, nor do I know anyone of the type. I wouldn't really say we are that hardcore (for the lack of a better word) or anything and I won't judge you for your preferences and all. It's like saying that those who watch anime instead of an American-made cartoon is hardcore. Or saying those who watch Dr Who or Misfits before being aired in the US instead of The Big Bang Theory or How I Met Your Mother is hardcore.

And not every game gets localised. Just sayin' One example I can think of now is Ace Attorney Investigations 2 for the DS. They've brought over the previous games in the series albeit delayed (and the GBA version never made it afaik). But at least that was for the DS which is hacked and can be patched with a translation.

And with all due respect, ignorance isn't the answer. It may be bliss but the problems will still exist.

Okay I see where you're going, just like super mario bros 2 was supposed to be very difficult SMB style levels that came out in japan, yet in USA we got that makeover game for SMB 2.

I don't understand your Store A and Store B scenario though, this might just be where I live. But it the closest proximity to me all stores sell the same region consoles so I don't see why you would need to swap consoles around locally, possibly on the internet.

Either way, the whole desire for region free consoles is pretty apparent, I just don't see a lot of people who care about it around me, if any. Thats why I would consider someone telling me their playing a game I never heard of from a different country a hardcore gamer. Because they would have to have some kind of deeper knowledge and research in order to know they want that game. I guess hardcore gamer also means playing games for hours on end, and then the ones who passionately scream in their microphones at n00bs, that't not who I am referring to though, just people who know a lot about what their gaming, compared to someone who just buys games based on the cover and the title.

Seriously, if I want to import a PS Vita game it'll cost me $80-100 depending on the game.
No thanks... Even if region unlocking was an option, I couldn't afford to do that enough times to make it worthwhile.

edit: but digital games would still rule.

I pretty much am inclined to agree that it's a bad idea. Spending another $250 or more on another system is ridiculous. Especially because you'll probably pay more than that, and there's all sorts of region issues, like credit cards, IP addresses, and all that jazz. You'd be better off waiting for some kind of region-free hack.

The games do not always get released in the US, as often there is not enough demand for some certain games, especially some certain Japanese games; and the publishers do not want to pay a large sum of money and spend a lot of time for games that probably would not sell well. If all games came out were translated for every region, I would have no problem. However, as they are not, I still have an issue with region locking. It seems stupid to pay $180+ for a duplicate system that you might only play a few foreign games on.

Believe or not, region locking is a bigger problem in Japan than in US/EU. This is because US dollar is weaker than Japanese yen. Many gamers over at Japan will buy games from US and Europe just to save some money (reverse importation). While there are also other reasons for region locking, reverse importation is the biggest reason. Manufactures and publishers want to keep Japanese yen in Japanese market. Even Atlus admitted the reason for region locking Persona 4 Arena (first PS3 retail game to be region locked) is to prevent reverse importation.

Anyway, back to your question and your faulty assumption, it costs money and burden to have two consoles that does the same thing except in different regions. There are games that in Japan that simply won't make it to western market for whatever reason. There are also instances where the same game in different market has different content.

I'm a JRPG & Visual Novel fan and it pains me to see games that never made it to US market even though they are great games. It is already expensive to import Japanese games (because yen is strong), it'll cost me more money to buy Japanese console due to region locking.

93.48 Yen is stronger than the US dollar? Weird. Regardless, region locking only forces people to install software mods on their consoles to bypass said draconian measures.

It is when you considered the price. Let's take Pokemon Black 2 as an example. When PKB2 launched, it cost

* 4800 Yens in Japanese market (approx. 51 US dollars)
* 35 US dollars in US market

Valkyria Chronicle PS3 when launched,

* 7980 Yen in Japanese market (approx. 75 US dollars at 2008, now approx. 85 US dollars)
* 40 US dollars in US market

Because I'm not a fat redhead boy who receives everything from his parents. Man, there are some other and easy ways, why I would expend the console price twice if that can be fixed with a single and free System Update?
Nintendo already receives a great amount of money from its costumers, I see the lack of multiregion as a bad customer service from part of them...
