why i think Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed is better than Mario Kart

so i was busy completing Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed and then i realized, "this is a pretty decent mario kart clone" which quickly turned to "wait... i think i'm starting to like this more then mario kart" to "OMFG I'M SUCH A SEGAFAG DREAMCAST4EVER AFJEQTHJIQEFNHAORFOKJ"

but i do have some legitimate reasons why i prefer this over mario kart, and let me explain why...

- SASRT has much better variety of characters then some of the new Mario Kart games

i know a lot of you will bitch at me for not liking Dry Bones, or whatever obscure mario enemy they shove into the roaster because there obviously running out of playable characters, but i like the line-up they have for Sonic All-Star Racing and it isn't JUST sonic characters either, they have tons of others that span Sega's history. Maybe cause i grew up more with these Sega characters i was able to recognize and appreciate characters like Alex Kid and AGES which is why i like it so much, even though they added weird and completely unrelated characters this time around like Danica Patrick and the guy on the cover of Football Manager, seriously...?

- better power ups

i can probably go on about how insultingly game-breaking the blue-shell is, it's that cheap. the best part is SASRT doesn't really have a power-up like that, unless you count the little RC cars but they act more like red shells, they also have a catcher's mitt power-up that works like the tanooki tail in MK7... except it actually protects you from shit instead of taking up space and and having to block incoming attacks manually, and in general the power-ups just feel a bit more balanced then mario kart

- they take advantage of the multiple-vehicles gimmick much better then MK7

i can't be the only one who was disappointing about how MK7 handled the whole vehicle shifting thing, it was just mostly "i'm in a kart lol" then "cool, i'm swimming/gliding.... oh now i'm a kart again" for every lap and thats it. SASRT on the other hand does this much better cause not only does your vehicle change, but the entire layout of the level does too, like you'd be driving for a lap or so and suddenly you reach a cliff or a huge monster breaks off part of the track and then WHHHHHAAAAAOOOOOOOOOO I'M FLYING/IN A BOAT, THIS IS SO AWESOME!!!!

did i mention you actually fly in SASRT? you don't just glide in one direction for 3 seconds

so yeah, this game has definitely given the Mario Kart series a run for it's money, but i'm still hoping that nintendo does something interesting for Mario Kart U, or whatever there gonna call it

also Diddy Kong Racing exists and both of them ripped it off, there... you happy?

-Blue Shell isn't cheap, you just suck.
-Boat sucks. Mind of it's own.
-Diddy Kong Racing and SASRT don't rip off MK, it's a genre.
-Characters dont mean shit. MK has more recognizable and lovable characters. Yoshi > Alex Kidd.
-RC sucks.

/thread.

-yes, the Blue Shells ARE cheap, by it's very nature it's cheap, the only reason it exist is to punish players for being too skilled and rewarding sucky players by instantly screwing over whoever in first, ever other power-up is design just to mess with whose right next to you, but the blue shell is just made to fuck with anyone whose had time to learn to be that skilled

-well duh, nobody really likes the boats anyway

-you really didn't pay attention to what i posted, did you?

-then this game really isn't made for you then, is it? it's for sega fans obviously

-elaborate?

Dry Bones is Awesome IMO.

dude, SASRT have characters from Sega, and mario kart has only from the Mario franchise.

of course he is, to be honest he's the only one i play with in multi-player

wouldn't it be more cool though if Nintendo actually did make a kart racer including other nintendo characters? just call it Super Smash Bros. Kart lol

funny that I never get hit by blue shells. Guess you just aren't as good at mario kart like you think you are. You should practice avoiding blue shells, and actually learning how to avoid being hit by them, like me. Makes the game really easy actually.

This game is for people who are fans of kart racers, like me. I love the game on the WiiU. I play it every day. But the characters still aren't as memorable as Mario characters. Also what football douche are you talking about? I got the WiiU version which has Wreck It Ralph and Danica Patrick... that hot piece of ass.

When I shoot an RC, it doesn't go straight to the player ahead of me or anything. It seems like it goes anywhere. It'll sometimes go right passed people to hit someone further up. Kind of pointless.

-Blue Shells aren't, you can still evade them if you're skilled enough.
-Boats are indeed shit
-"also Diddy Kong Racing exists and both of them rip it off, there... you happy?"
-That excuse could be used for anything. "You didn't like Duke Nukem Forever because you're not a Duke fan"
-idfk

That said, S&ASRT is a great game, and so's Mario Kart. There's no real need to compare the two.

No... That'd be shit. Other franchises aren't cut out for kart racing, and in cases like F-Zero, it just wouldn't feel right.

but what i'm saying is the Blue Shell shouldn't even exist at all, sure there's a way to avoid them in MK7 but that doesn't excuse how cheap they are in other games were you can't tell what items the other racers have

sorry about then again, not everyone is going to appreciate the nods to sega's history, there references and homages only there for hardcore sega fans to get

Football Manager guy is only available in the Steam version of the game along with Pryo and Heavy from Team Fortress 2

Man people bitch about the Blue Shell. But so what. Does it punish you? Depends. I never looked at it as a form of punishment. What fun is it to always come in first knowing that you'll always come in first without any challenge. It's to test you. Are you able to bounce back and come back and win? Show your skills if you can or not.

i'm not saying they won't like the game because of that necessarily, they just won't get much of the references and characters in the game but the more you "get them" the more you'll get out of the game, it's kinda like mech anime fans with Super Robot Wars in that respect, or more relevant Super Smash Bros.

"-Boat sucks. Mind of it's own."

Boats are fine, you just suck ;)

I play the ps3 version, I like it, although it needs a patch to sort out the people abusing collision detection.

Blue Shell, how to avoid on Mario Kart 7? Old games you can mini-turbo it.

Only ways I know of to avoid the Shell on 7 are

Drop back and let someone else take it
Drive off the edge and get a mini turbo when you are put back on track as it's quicker than taking the hit
Have a item (mushroom, star, bullet bill)

So as you never get hit by them, I'd like to know how to avoid them in this common situation

Too far away to drop back and let 2nd take it, too far from the finish to get across the line before being hit, no suitable item and no where to drop off track. How to dodge?

Fyi, you should probably quote someone in the future if you want them to reply to you, and also speak english. It'll help out on this forum.

The boats suck. They handle like ass... but that's not unexpected. I guess it kind of makes it more realistic, can't exactly do sharp turns on waves.

Also you know how to avoid blue shells in Mario Kart 7. I just drop to second place. I've never run into the problem where I can't catch up if I get hit. I always drop to second or I'm either too far ahead where it doesn't matter if I get hit or not.

The problem with the English in that post? This is a forum, it does not have to be perfect. Did you just feel like being the grammar Nazi as I missed some punctuation? Did it make you feel good?

Boats suck and handle like ass because you say so? They handle fine, they turn sharp if you drift. Example, burning depths. Narrow corridors and tight turns.

Boat seems to be turning fine and taking sharp corners at speed. Seems like there is no problem with the handling there, could it be, you suck with them? Just as everyone who has a problem with the blue shell, apparently sucks.

Also you know how to avoid blue shells in Mario Kart 7. I just drop to second place. I've never run into the problem where I can't catch up if I get hit. I always drop to second or I'm either too far ahead where it doesn't matter if I get hit or not.

Nice question dodge. You said you never get hit and can dodge them all the time and those who cannot are not as good as they think, yet fail to answer how to dodge in the situation put to you.

Man you are reeeeally taking offense to my posts. You should probably get off for the night. And no, it isn't "just" me who thinks they suck. A lot of people do. But like I said, it's understandable.

And I didn't dodge the question, I said that I'm either too far ahead or I just drop to second place. Most of the time I just drop to second place though, it's rare that I'm too far ahead. Happy? Now calm down.

You took a cheap shot at my post, and I responded. What did you expect after saying "speak english. It'll help out on this forum." To a post that is simply missing some punctuation and possibly has some spelling mistakes.

And no, it isn't "just" me who thinks they suck. A lot of people do. But like I said, it's understandable.

A lot think the blue shell is cheap, yet you dismiss it, say it is not and that it is the player at fault. They are not skilled enough to dodge.

And I didn't dodge the question, I said that I'm either too far ahead or I just drop to second place. Most of the time I just drop to second place though, it's rare that I'm too far ahead. Happy? Now calm down.

Not really. According to you, not dodging the blue shell is the fault of the player, the player not being skilled enough. The situation I put forward, the player is unable to do anything about it, but it's still apparently their fault and not a cheap weapon.

You drop to second place, what if second place is paying attention and also reverses? I suppose you now suck as you didn't dodge it, even though there is nothing you can do if the player behind does that.

Calm down? I am perfectly calm. Do you not like people addressing points you made? Would you have preferred me to simply come in and say the boats are fine, you suck if you can't handle them,as you have done with the blue shell?

Again. It's to test the skill. It wouldn't be fun at all if you can come in first all the time easily.

I wasn't speaking from that point of view, so that's my fault and I apologize.

Also I do apologize for coming off and saying speak english. I read your post and it did not make sense to me at all, it took me a couple read throughs because I kept missing words. So again, for that I apologize.

Again. It's to test the skill. It wouldn't be fun at all if you can come in first all the time easily.

I can get this point of the view, test your racing skill, see if you can recover and get going again. If the blue shell was only on laps 1 & 2, I would be fine with it and would not think it cheap and would pretty much share this opinion. When it happens on the latter stages of lap 3, it just feels cheap, there is no time to recover. Often it would seem simply shadowing the guy in 1st until the blue shell appears and then taking it, is the better option, which just does not sit right with me, in a racing game.

I feel Sonic has got the balance much better. You can test your skill with the Bees, it's not situational, if you are good enough, you can pretty much avoid the swarm 100% of the time, with no reliance on what others are doing. If you hit the Bees, you are at fault, unlike the blue shell.

I do not think we will agree on the blue shell though, so I will just say I disagree with you on it :).

Oh and the RC cars on Sonic.

I noticed this,

"When I shoot an RC, it doesn't go straight to the player ahead of me or anything. It seems like it goes anywhere. It'll sometimes go right passed people to hit someone further up. Kind of pointless."

Can't be bothered to quote properly, but that is normally because of the lock on time. The cars are dumb fire first, they take a bit to lock. Too close to the person in front and they may pass before locking on and will end up going for someone else.

The game fails to mention this for some reason though, it really should be one of the tips or in the manual.

- SASRT has much better variety of characters then some of the new Mario Kart games This is just a matter of taste it doesn't make any of the games better... It doesn't even affect gameplay. And we all know that Nintendo characters are way memorable, want it or not. It's not because Mario is better, it's more because Nintendo was more competent in maintaining the franchise popularity while Sega's mascot while still popular isn't what it was in the early 90's, even you have to admit.

- better power ups You do have a point, blue shell sucks. The tanooki tail could be more useful but it still have the other traditional items that are work well imo and they actually made the octupus item more effective than in the Mario Kart DS version.

- they take advantage of the multiple-vehicles gimmick much better then MK7 You are saying it yourself it's a gimmick... If it's a gimmick does it really matter which game uses better gimmick. Or is it that the multiple-vehicles is actually not a gimmick? At least in Mario Kart 7, you can use it for taking short-cuts (try using triple mushrooms while flying) and when you drive water your car gets more slippery making it more difficult to drive in "wet" ambients.

I am going to be frank. I don't know much about any Sonic All-Star Racing game, but I can tell that you don't know Mario Kart 7 well enough. And if you think SASRT is cool that's fine, but than you should focus in saying what's the good point about the game. You focused more in discrediting Mario Kart and forgot to convince us of why is SASRT that good. You'll only enrage MK fans and won't convince anyone, try to tell why SASRT is good without making partial comparisons, otherwise you'll only cause fanboyism :creep:

thats why i titled this "why i think SASRT is better then mario kart" i'm pretty sure i made it pretty clear it's an opinion, people can take it or leave it. i mean people say way more bias stuff around here and try to pretend it's fact or worse, the right opinion

besides i haven't gotten that many butthurt responses yet by Mario Kart fans, if they really like it so much they'd still love Mario Kart and wouldn't care about my opinion at all, right? (Different Strokes for Different Folks)
