I just got a used PSP and need to get a memory stick. The PSP is not here yet, so I have some time to shop around.

I thought I needed to get something that was duo or pro duo, but now I see some posts about people using SD cards?

What's the deal, are there different formats that are compatible with PSP?

I'm just looking for something that I can pick up at bestbuy/target/whatever for a reasonable price in the 16GB - 32GB range.

Pro Duo is the standard PSP format. Get a Sandisk Ultra II Pro Duo if you can.

Regarding MicroSD's, there's an adapter (the Photofast CR5400) that enables you to utilise up to two Micro SDHC's. However if you can afford it, and aren't ADHD about having EVERYTHING accessible all the time, a genuine Pro Duo is preferable.

CR5400 is no longer in production. Now days any MicroSD to Memory Duo adapter you buy is fake. Now fake one can or cannot work. My experience I bought two of them, one work in slot 1 only (max 16GB), while the other fried my microSD card.

If you have the money I honestly recommend genuine Memory Duo Stick. If you are lucky you may find a 32 GB one for $50.

OK I will definitely look around for a genuine Memory Duo. It's not so bad if I can't keep everything I don't think.

PhotoFast CR-5400's are still available online; how can you tell if they are fake? I bought mine on Amazon about a year ago and it looks legit; here's another:

At first, I thought only slot 1 was working until I read that you have to format the CR-5400 with both msds in place using the PSP's formatting function. I picked up a couple of SanDisk 32GB msds on sale over the holidays and now I have 60+ GB of storage.

If the slot is not smooth (edge showed in the last picture), it is fake.

It is likely fake because like I said, it is no longer in production (last production batch ended years ago). That Amazon link you posted means nothing. Sellers just using that product page to sell counterfeit CR-5400.

Cool, thanks for the link. I wasn't suggesting that this was a reputable sales link, btw. I think it's pretty common knowledge to most people that Amazon sellers use stock images for their products.

Interestingly, mine is white (so maybe it's real,) has a lot no. (so it was produced after 10/8/08,) didn't ship with the original packaging (so who the hell knows,) but the slots are smooth (so ...man, I don't even know anymore.) Suffice it to say, it works; I guess I just got lucky ... so far.
