IMO, the Wii U sale being just okay (not bad and not good) is due to how Nintendo has first a foremost marketed the console and secondly restricted the consoles potential as a media hub and home tablet.

The Wii U can easy be made into a multimedia console with support for DivX, MPEG-4 and all other popular video codecs with MP3 playback and photo viewing/editing and organizing.

At the same time the Wii U can be marketed as a Google TV replacement with a much more intuitive approach. With the Wii U's touch game pad and Tri-Core CPU, developers could easily create Android like apps (Photo Editor, Office Apps, etc) on the Wii U platform if Nintendo provides the tools for them to do so which could easily surpass current Google TV both in performance and ease of use.

Also, Nintendo forgot the fact that original Wii did very well and totally left motion controls and a huge Wii backwards compatibly library out of their marketing. If my memory serves me well, the consumers that are most likely looking into to upgrading to a Wii U are original Wii owner's.

The Wii U being more expensive and a bit less innovative at launch compared to the original Wii (which totally changed the ways games are now played), Nintendo has to make an effort to market to core gamers who are usually the ones to buy and try new consoles when they are released since they (the core gamers) always want the latest and greatest gadget.

Personally for myself I find the to be extremely fairly priced for what it offers, here's my breakdown:

Wii U Deluxe = $350

Wii U has touch pad with great internet browser (comparable to Chrome on Android) and some apps (for the time being, pretty sure Nintendo is going to release more with time) - Google TV is $125 without touch pad but has more apps and media playback via USB. - (Wii U touch pad + apps worth $100)

100% fully backwards compatible with Wii games and can upscale them via HDMI digital signal, basically has a Wii with HDMI adapter inside - Wii mini without WiFi or HDMI output is $100 but has Wii remote and nunchuk ready for Wii games, Wii HDMI adapters are $25. - (Wii hardware inside Wii U with visual upgrades worth $100)

Wii U can stream Wii U/Virtual Console games to game pad freeing up the TV (for some else to watch or just to save power usage when alone), basically a DS around the where the console is setup. - (worth nothing but a really nice feature to have)

So the math is $350 minus $200 worth of real hardware features = $150 you're paying for a Wii U console with 32GB internal storage which runs silent compared to the 360 and PS3 and uses less than half the power consumption.

An Xbox 360 4GB goes for $150 - $200 price range, yes it has apps and Internet Explorer but at an expense for $60 per year for Live Gold and on top of all that who really wants to use apps and Internet Explorer on a controller anyways.

I think the Wii U is totally worth it's price tag and more, the only thing left now is software releases and added features (apps more apps, and media playback and streaming) via update to attract more consumers.

Nintendoland and New Super Mario Bros U should've had online modes, imo. Also they need to add trophy/achievement support. They're not doing enough to give their games replay value and replay value is what attracts the hardcore gamer.

Also I don't get why I can't use my Tritton headset that I use with my PS3. I plug it into the USB on PS3 to chat online. Why shouldn't the Wii U do the same?

Software updates could fix all of this but I'm not getting my hopes up. At least we have WindwakerHD coming.

You're right, I forgot all about Nintendo's flaky online service at lunch. But still their marketing downright sucked, when I saw the first Wii U commercial, I was immediately put off.

Then hearing about how Nintendo says your Wii games won't look any better on the Wii U is totally false, HDMI already means a cleaner picture regardless of upscale or not plus the upscale which makes original Wii games run at your native TV resolution 720p/1080p means your TV does not have to upscale itself which also translate to a cleaner, less motion blurring and input lag picture (regardless if the Wii U upscale method is a simple one).

It just Nintendo's marketing sucks and for some reason I feel they are held back at launch trying not to make false promises which is good but it just comes to show they do not understand HD gaming just yet. We'll see when E3 comes and they big Wii U OS update Nintendo is promising for 2014.

So...you're smarter than the entire nintendo marketing department, nemix77? That's nice to hear. Since you're apparently an expert on the matter, can you tell us roughly how much people would have bought it if it could play all the video formats out of the box?
And how much people WOULDN'T buy the thing because it would cost more since there are still legality fees to be used on most of these? Or that the thing wouldn't be done in time for the Christmas season because of additional implementing and testing of features?

At the same time the Wii U can be marketed as a Google TV replacement with a much more intuitive approach. With the Wii U's touch game pad and Tri-Core CPU, developers could easily create Android like apps (Photo Editor, Office Apps, etc) on the Wii U platform if Nintendo provides the tools for them to do so which could easily surpass current Google TV both in performance and ease of use.
Yes. Without a doubt. Because all nintendo has to do is snap their fingers to create development kits, documentation and providing a sandbox environment in which potential developers could start creating. Oh, and those devs's would indoubtedly leave stupid google TV on the spot, even because they already have one, because...erm...it's nintendo, right? :)

Also, Nintendo forgot the fact that original Wii did very well and totally left motion controls and a huge Wii backwards compatibly library out of their marketing. If my memory serves me well, the consumers that are most likely looking into to upgrading to a Wii U are original Wii owner's.
No. Sorry. On this, I've got to agree. Nintendo DID mention the backward compatibility. More than once. They told in advance which wii peripherals would work (in short: all of them) and even mentioned this on the wii channel.
The reason most of those people already own wii's is because they tend to like the products nintendo makes. Or at least their games.

I'm not sure what you're trying to prove by showing off some money shots there. Fact is that nintendo is losing money on each wiiu (note: so little they only have to sell one game to make a profit, but still: a loss). Dividing it into different shop prices isn't going to make sense whatsoever. It's not like they're buying their own product in the shop, solder everything together and then sell it as a wiiu.

nintendo's wii u sales and game sales are not even that bad. just SLIGHTLY lower than what they had expected. i think they did a pretty decent job with their launch and people are still buying the shit out of it now since the NVC a few days ago...

EDIT:

Code:
The figures cover the period from April to December last year (the financial year will end on March 31st). Nintendo posted a net income of 14,545 million yen (around $159m) for the nine-month period, after a historic $530 million loss last year. The company revised its net sales estimates for the full year down by 17.3%.

As of December 2012, the Wii U had sold 3.06 million units worldwide. That breaks down to around 1.32 million in North America, 900,000 in Europe and 830,000 in Japan. The Wii shifted 3.53 million from April to December. Nintendo has previously stated that it aims to sell 5.5 million Wii Us before the end of March, but it has now revised this target to 4 million.

Games sales were hoped to reach 24 million, but the new estimate is 16 million (11.69 million have been sold so far.) The best-selling Wii U launch game was Nintendo Land, with 2.33 million sold.
3DS sales are substantially up - software sales increased by 41% year-on-year, with hardware up by 11%. But Nintendo has still cut the sales target for its handheld from 17.5 million units to a more reasonable 15 million.

Sales may not be ideal, but it could always be worse. Virtual Boy anyone? That didn't even reach 400,000 worldwide sales.

And to those who think that this is Nintendo's last console, stop your bitching and take time to smell the roses, Nintendo's isn't doing that badly.

It doesn't have any games, and casuals chooses Wii over Wii U because of the price. When e3 2013 comes around we'll be getting sales, good.

Bad marketing huh? And a lack of games, you say? I guess the 3.2 million sales came outta Nintendo's rectum, just like your comments.

Here's the big problem... the name.
Seriously, ask most people (I'm not talking gamers) about the Wii U, and you might get 10% think it's an add-on or peripheral, and then the rest have absolutely no clue.
They should have called it the Wii 2 or Nintendo ______ something that was named or numbered differently than the Wii.

Playstation 1, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Playstation Portable (PSP). and PS Vita are all original names? Xbox? Xbox 360? It's neither an X or 360 degrees.

Exactly. Wii U? WTF does the U stand for?
Wii 2
Wii 2013
Wii 360
Wii 24/7

At least you would know it was a follow-up.

Xbox, WTF does the X in Xbox mean?

Wonderswan? WTF does that have to do with games? It was neither wonderful, nor was it a swan.

Wii = We
U = You

We + You = Everyone

Was that so hard?

Nintendo screwed up again. Just like Wii and 3DS. Sony also did the same thing with PS Vita. The launch line is scarce when it comes to worthwhile titles. The great thing is that there will be some great games hitting shelves sooner than later for the console.

The Wii U outsold the Vita. The Wii sold 98 million units, the 3DS has sold 10 times the Vita. Stop being so f***ing negative.

Also they need to add trophy/achievement support.

No! That shit seriously needs to severely die. I'm tired of everybody and everything making a big fuss out of the garbage, it's pointless. Ooooh you got a big number? You must be a hardcore gamer! Bullshit, it doesn't offer replay value. It never has, it wasn't until the damn 360 came out that everybody started making a big stink about them.

It doesn't add anything to the game. You could easily do those missions or whatever without the need of an electronic trophy telling you too. People have done it for years before the 360. Original Keyblade only in Kingdom Hearts? Go through A Link to the Past with only 3 hearts? Beat Mario 64 with as little stars as possible (without glitching). Seriously, I'm tired of that dumb argument that it adds to the game, it doesn't. It distracts from the game. I'll play a game, and then developers will push out sometimes damn near impossible trophies/achievements, and then look, you can't do it because it's too hard for you and now you feel incomplete. Fuck that shit, I hope that stuff dies with the PS4 and NextBox. I'm glad Nintendo goes against it.
nintendo's wii u sales and game sales are not even that bad. just SLIGHTLY lower than what they had expected.

They aren't bad at all. They sold more WiiU's at launch and in the launch window than 360 or PS3 did, and look at that, those consoles aren't dead.

It has games. Maybe you shouldn't be so selective.

The problem with Nintendo is they're one of the worst when it comes to advertising. They gotta put commercials out on TV, not just the internet. When kids come home from school, a lot of kids just like to grab a piece of fruit... I mean some candy and pop, and watch TV for an hour before dinner. Put commercials on. A lot of kids don't want to play online for a short while before they have to get off to eat. Advertise the shit out of the WiiU, don't just hope that it'll spread like wild fire on the internet.

I on the other hand find Wii U to be overpriced at the moment. I do not feel the price is just at this moment. Game library is small at the moment, and Nintendo has yet to tap into Wii U's potential.

One thing you should be aware of vWii over HDMI, it is not capable of surround sound (Pro Logic II) at all. This is due to the fact that vWii setting is tied to the Wii U settings. When Wii U is in 5.1 settings, vWii audio signal will be in 5.1 format with 4 channels being muted. No receiver can decode Pro Logic II in 5.1 format. When it is in Stereo mode, Pro Logic II is disabled. This is Wii U exclusive problem when it comes to Wii backward compatibility.

While on the topic of HDMI, you should also know that Nintendo is being way too ahead this time round. Nintendo opted for LPCM over HDMI as your only option for true 5.1 surround sound. Most people still have old receiver where it is not capable of processing audio over HDMI. Lack of Dolby Digital and/or DTS support with Toshlink means these people have to spend $200+ on a new receiver or $100+ HDMI audio de-embedder with analog output.

Wii U simply stretches Wii game to 720p/1080p. Most people noticed improved image because the signal is digital at source, compared to component at source for Wii (analog signal degrades as it travels), not because it upscales.

Wii U does not apply any upscaling filter (which some high end TV will do for 480p/720p signal).

Bitch much? The original Wii never had 5.1 channels, the games were never encoded to output in Pro Logic, therefore, your logic is flawed. No one, but the truly obsessed audiophiles, will give a damn about LPCM audio. You're reading way too far into this. You're paying too much attention to what's wrong rather than what's good about the console. As far as being too expensive, let's see you develop a console with the same technology and try to sell it for cheaper, then we'll see who the real whiny wanker is.

Stop it, your being overly obsessed with something of this caliber is making you a real dickweed. Anything Sony and Microsoft does you don't hesitate to treat them like gods, but as soon as Nintendo has the audacity to release an HD console that doesn't cater to your every need, you swarm and attack as flies do to carrion. You're nothing but a trolling, misbegotten scavenger who wastes his time complaining about every single imperfection.
34314873.jpg

The Wii U isn't perfect, we all know that, but the fact you spend every waking moment to discredit it? Gee, and I thought consoles were all about games. Long gone are the days when people played 16-bit games on a TV with only an RF modulator and didn't get obsessed with dot crawl, stereo output or 5.1 surround sound. What happened? Oh, I know, audio/graphics whores like you ruined it.

"OH NOEZ, TEH WII U OUTPUTS IN LPCM AUDIO AND WII GAMES DON'T UPSCALE TO 1080P TROLOLOLO NINTENDO IS DOOMED. PS4 IS TEH BEST" Well, well, well, you're quite the achiever. Not only are you a misbegotten fool, but you're also an expert at bitching, and people said I complained. But to have been able to find out how the Wii U outputs video and audio must have taken you, what, a month to find out? I bet you must have a busy life being unemployed and not in school.

HDMI 720/1080p is good enough. But if you think Wii games were encoded in 5.1 surround and upscaled to 1080p, you must not have seen Nintendo's statement. Do us a favor and bugger off. You really need to join IGN or Gamespot, they just recently had their troll position opened up.

the arguments of those against random and shadow aren't good at all...it's as if you guys arguing against the wii u do not even have one at all, which gives you no right OR justification in saying anything negative about it. how could you have an opinion on something that you do not even own or use on a daily basis like we do?

random and shadow have pretty much debunked every negative thing you guys have said... it's like arguing with a 5 year old on why they have to go to bed at 8 o'clock.

you people should go back to the drawing board and revamp your arguments. shadow and random +1, the other guys, big fat zero's...

Pro Logic II is indeed simulated 5.1 channel (5.1 channel by matrix encoding in Stereo output), and original Wii DO encodes game into Pro Logic II, just like Gamecube. Don't believe me? Go to Dolby website to check it out.

@Pattonfiend67
Although I do not own a Wii U, I do have some hands on experience with them. The reason I say it is overpriced at the moment is because little stands out about Wii U against PS3 or Xbox 360.
