So basically what happened here is that I went in an argument with one of my friends and we debated about whether extending school hours or decreasing would help the student do better overall from a scientific and academic point of view,I leave you with this question to think carefully which is the right path to follow.

1)Guys don't forget to state the Cons and Pros of your choices.

2)General opinions are accepted.

I believe (British, at least) school hours are fine. However I think it may be more efficient to have 6 lessons of 40 minutes a day instead of 5 lessons of 1 hour due to average human attention span etc.

I worked it out once and the same amount of contact time could be had without holidays and with 4 day weeks- I would go that. That said school as daycare would kick that in the head before it even got moving. I imagine people could be somewhat more amenable to holidays being moved back to the earlier style of farmyard needs rather than random religious festivals plus summer though.

Hours themselves... never sure on this one and worse I have to think about multiple people and young people in particular. There were and are still days I can spend 19 hours learning about something and get a lot done and there are others where I feel like running around instead- that quickly becomes unmanageable though.

Also 5 lessons... I know I have been out of the game for a while but 4 lessons a day was the norm for me and mine.

We have 4 classes each day, with four 30 minute lunches in the middle. Each class is an hour and 41 minutes. We start at 7:30, and end at 1:45.

Students in my class can barely get through the day without complaining about being tired, hungry, and whatnot. So I'd say that this schedule is fine, as it's not too short nor too long. I personally have an abbreviated schedule, so I only have 3 classes a day. By the time this happens, if it does it won't matter either way.

Shortening school days and making it so we have to go to school on the weekend would piss tons of people off. Extended hours as well because well, staying longer at school? People do have jobs, and other things they need to do.

I left school years ago.
We had way to many free hours so Imho they should make a better system to teach in.
The current one is just flawed as fuck.
As soon as one teacher gets ill the entire roster falls apart.

Other then that the hours where fine.

At my high school, the system was four 1.25 hour classes, 10 minute breaks in between and a 40 min lunch. Now that I'm in university I have four classes at 50 mins a piece with 10 min breaks. I very much prefer the university system... If the high school wanted to keep the same hours, they could add another class and change it to 50 mins each. Now that I'm thinking about it, the last fifteen minutes of classes in high school sucked.

So, yeah, I would say the current system is okay, but in high school they should have had shorter classes and more of them.

I believe they need to shorten the hours. I'm in the 8th grade, and it's 7 days of awfulness. 8 hours, for me.. Oh my god. I love education, but things are so long and tiring. If they cut off an hour or two, i'd be most happy. I get so much homework, I hate it. I have a half hour to rest after school, and then read Quran for a half hour. Then the rest of the day is doing homework :(

At my highschool, we have about 50 minutes per class, and I have 7 classes, 4 core, 3 electives. To be honest, I think things are fine as it is, as my classes are already pretty short. If they were longer, I think students would get too bored, and lose interest, and if they're too short, they wouldn't have time to get help, or absorb enough information to understand the subject.

My school day is about 7 hours long. I think the length is fine but I would mind if it started later and ended later. I would much rather get home later than have to get up 6 AM every morning like I do now.

The length of a school day should be roughly the same length as the average working day. The whole point of school after all is to turn a child into a member of the workforce.

If you want to help students do better academically, work on improving the quality of education rather than simply increasing how much school kids have.

There's a reason kids in countries such as Canada have about the same amount of schooling as the US while having better academic performance.

Shorten it in high school. I was doing a program where I took college classes and high school classes at the same time. I was able to distinguish that high school goes at to slow of a pace, it's not demanding or challenging. Shorten the days but make the classes faster pace.

When I leave for work, I hit school buses picking up in the morning. When I get out of work, I hit them on the way home.

So, if it gets me to and from work faster, I'm all for extending school hours. Also, if it teaches kids to learn how to fucking spell, I'm all for kids being in school 24/7.

Will in most Middle eastern countries we study for 8 to 9 hours a day so the British school system is different,I actually wanted something similar to it.

a discipline should be kept. this should be based on the requirement of the syllabus and age.

here in tanzania, secondary school is for around 8 hrs with breaks. That's the max and i don't think it is too much considering there are a lot of things to do and learn.

So you think using the university system is much better in a normal high school,I think this will be a really smart system .

Then the rest of the day is doing homework :(
So you would like it to be like 5 to 6 hours instead, also I never knew that you have school 7 days a week so you study the whole week this's bad, YOU READ THE Quran I'm proud of you ^_^ .

My school day is about 7 hours long. I think the length is fine but I would mind if it started later and ended later. I would much rather get home later than have to get up 6 AM every morning like I do now.

So lets say it would start at 9 o'clock in the morning, would be better.

It looks good you will avoid traffic in the morning and at the end of the day too.

The length of a school day should be roughly the same length as the average working day. The whole point of school after all is to turn a child into a member of the workforce.

Will it is true that longer hours will get them ready for the entring the work force, but I believe that it's not a requirement, instead teaching them a skills like how to use the PC ,or general work related skills like pupblic speaking in real life situations is much more effective, what do you think?

If you want to help students do better academically, work on improving the quality of education rather than simply increasing how much school kids have.

There's a reason kids in countries such as Canada have about the same amount of schooling as the US while having better academic performance.

So you are saying that we should take more care in schools curriculum instead of extending or shorting the school day , but again how many hours do the Canadian schools offer daily ?

a discipline should be kept. this should be based on the requirement of the syllabus and age.

here in tanzania, secondary school is for around 8 hrs with breaks. That's the max and i don't think it is too much considering there are a lot of things to do and learn.

You know the numbers of subject can effect this so in Tanzania school kids study for 8 hours , if you look at what they study most likely you will find a subject that you can remove from the curriculum,do you know any such subject ?
