Hacking Anyone anxiously awaiting homebrew for the 3DS?

Sure some of us have bought some flashcarts, but let's be honest, these emulators are nothing compared to what could be released in the future once homebrew comes to the 3DS. For one, this will mean some really damn good snes, genesis, and gba emulators, that will run buttery smooth. I know devs are refraining from stating their progress in order to not give people the ability to download 3DS games, I believe that's why everything is so quiet right now, but If only they would just allow old school gaming emulators for now, that would be ideal. I also know they don't want to release hombrew because they profit of flascarts but it's gotten to the point where homebrew is overdue for this system. And for those worried about piracy, I honestly wouldn't pirate any 3DS games and if we don't get this feature but just emulators that's fine. If I see that Game devs are willing to provide quality titles, more power to them, by all means I will support them. My gripe and reason for homebrew though is that I'm just tired of Nintendo doing the same thing with the 3DS that they did with the Wii. They aren't releasing the games I want nor do I have the patience to wait months in hope that something gets revealed. Some of us own physical copies some of us have bought these VC titles on the wii already! I think homebrew is going to make it's appearance on the 3DS this year. Do you guys feel the same way?

I'm excited for this thing to be blown wide open and unstoppable, just like the PSP and Wii.

I love playing emulators, and I'm surprised GBA can't easily be emulated on the DS, since it has everything and more as far as specs are concerned. Of course, we're all waiting for ROMs to be launchable, but Homebrew apps that make the system do thigs it was never designed to do are some of my favorite apps. I really lofe WiiMC on the Wii, and hopefully we'll get a rich media player like that, and not a shitty one like Moonshell, which can only play a single proprietary format. (Yuck) The 3DS is a powerful little machine, so I expect it to be able to play an H.264 movie @480p without any problems. Tablets with similar ARM chips have no problems, so we'll see... But yeah, I'm big into emulators and media player homebrew apps if you couldn't tell.

I felt compelled to copy this statement I just made from the main 3ds forum....

Once the 3DS gets homebrew, I'm only looking forward for NEW and improved emulators using the 3DS processor, the supercard dstwo is only capable of so much. However I HATE the fact that there are people already claiming all they want to do is fucking pirate 3d games. This is not cool. It also gives hombrew just a bad image overall. But the reality is homebrew can do so much for legit uses. Let's say you own a bunch of 3d games, ds, snes, gba or more games. With homebrew it could be possible to just place all those games on the 3ds's sd card! (64gigsdch?) Emulators would work really great. Plus other programs can be developed for it. The potential homebrew brings is great but if people are blatantly saying they want to steal right in our faces, that might piss of some devs and might complicate matters. My philosophy and THE ONLY reason you should ever download any retail copies (if this becomes possible) is to TRY the game temporarily, check it out and see if you like it. If you do, BUY and support the devs! If not delete the game and be glad you didn't waste your money. I think it's all a matter of maturity, morality and financial status that are the main issues when it comes to this. Maybe my suggestion might be too much for some too.

Well flash carts only run with the power of the original 2004-model DS, so... we all know this.

Also the PSP and other devices with hardware that's not the old DS already do emulation much better.

There will be a lot of cool 3D games. I would love to see some old 3d games in 3D. that would be awesome. But i think that the focus will be on emulators.

No, not really. While the idea of homebrew is nice, I'd rather the 3DS not be abandoned to 1st party Nintendo and 3rd party pure shovelware as much as the DS was. (There were some 3rd party titles not shovelware, but those are the exception, not the norm).

It's not about how awesome homebrew is, it's usually about how clueless people equate homebrew with pure piracy, and then pull support.

Above me, someone said the focus will be on emulators. Got it about half right.....for a few, that's what will happen. The rest will focus on loading games for their precious "backups" (aka Lol free games, aka "I'm going to try before I buy, then never actually buy"). And then the 3DS will hit the same slide the DS did. Renegade Kid is already preparing their excuses.

I'd rather have some awesome new games made than be able to play the same old systems I can emulate perfectly well on my PSP.

Shovelware is not a consequence of piracy, but a consequence of popularity. For example the NES and SNES had tonnes of shovelware, in fact the majority of game for those systems were terrible. The difference is that now we have the internet and can find out, not only from the price of games being relatively cheaper so we can buy more, but from the abundance of review websites.

Shovelware is not exclusively a conequence, but it is more likely that less AAA titles will show up from 3rd party sources.

However, depending on HOW the 3DS is finally hacked will have as much do with what happens as when. If it's easy for the average clueless user (like the PSP was for the most part), then expect the AAA titles to dry up. If it takes more than 5 mnutes, or hardware (flashcart).... then it'll stay relatively confined to a small percentage of users.

Frankly I just want the 3DS to be hacked so I don't have to open any 3DS games I buy. I love having sealed games in my collection.

Homebrew has never really been that good, so it doesn't excite me a whole lot.
Except Lemmings. Lemmings was fantastically fun on DS.

Considering that the PSP could run unsigned code on release as firmware 1.0 didn't actually have the sig checks in it yet... I find this story hard to believe because then it'd fall into "devs stayed away from the start due to piracy" territory"... but the successes of the DS (even with the R4 being a second-gen flash cart in 2007 or so, a good five years back) and Wii (even with the constant deluge of softmods) are good examples against the whole "piracy kills a system" idea.

To be honest, I don't. I am working at a toy store which also sells video games. I daily get this question: ''is there a way to play 3DS roms?'' It is wide spread that the 3DS is hacked, people keep asking me. If the 3DS Hack gets public, I won't be happy with it, since there will be homebrew at some point which will play or install 3DS games.

But yeah, who is me to complain about have fun with your emu's and other homebrew games, I won't disturb you.

I don't want to start a piracy arguing here, so i will stay on topic.

I 've played a feel homebrew on DS, Tyrian was awesome, and even better on the psp.
That's why i think that will be good HB on 3DS, like old pc games and stuff. It's nice to have those classics handheld.

Well once systems start to mature (and assuming their dumps aren't 5GB each) people actually do start putting up torrents with all the games up to a point, for easy collection.

Please tell me you're kidding. Even if that was a joke I'd just like to say that this kind of opinion is what blurs the line between 'homebrew' and 'piracy' in the Media's eye.

Myself I'll be using it to play back-ups of games I own, yes. (after all who enjoys lugging around a big case with all their valuable games in?) And for maybe 'extended demos' under the 24 rule. But mostly for me as the same for everyone else I'm just waiting to see what kind of emulators come out of this and if we can do other cool stuff with it too.

Only time will tell.
