I use CATSFC currently and it's pretty good, but some of my fav games like the DKC series or even Yoshi's Island don't very smoothly. Is there an emu that does? What does everyone favor on their DSTWO cards?

Thanks,
Jeff

CATSFC is pretty much the best SNES emulator for the DSTwo, if it doesn't work on that, then chances are it won't work.

But you are in luck, those were ported over to the GBA and the GBA versions seem to work pretty good for me. Although Yoshi's Island has a few small graphical glitches, but they are only during loading screens.

Ugh, but boy did those ports butcher perfectly good soundtracks.

I will probably get a LOT of flack for this... but I didn't like the GBA very much, some games I loved and I do still have 2 or 3 GBA's here (SP and clear purple and I think a green one... lol my collection is rather large.)

The DK ports on the GBA make me want to cry.... You play them on the SNES and think "Wow this is a 16 bit game?" you play them on the GBA and think.... "I miss my SNES...."

I feel the same about those ports, the colors were overly illuminated to make up for the non-backlit screen, and the GBA's CPU handled all the audio processing (didn't have a dedicated S-SMP like the Snes did), so the sound was poor in comparison.

maravig: Can you try Yoshi's Island and Donkey Kong Country on CATSFC 1.15? You can change the frame skipping if you want it to be playable with a more-or-less synchronised controller, too, at the cost of some slowdown.

I guess I'll try 1.17 considering the crashing issue in previous versions. Thanks!

Learn to romhack, fix the music yourself.
Alternately, program your own emulator.

Sure, give me some ROM hacking utilities and teach me how to program in ASM and I'll do it.

I'm not retracting what I said, most GBA ports sound like crap compared to their original counterparts.

I still stand by what I said, the GBA simply could not match the majesty of the SPC700 when it came to Snes ports.

He really doesn't know what he is talking about....

I typed up a long post about the difficulties of adding the SNES sound processor and CPU into the GBA emulator (yes you would need to add both chips from the SNES since the SNES's CPU fed the sound to the 64KB that the sound chip in the SNES used via DMA....) The problems of hacking the GBA to support said extra chips and then I said F it, too much effort to explain that what he said sounded pretty dumb.

By ROMhacking, I meant to just switch out the GBA version's music. I don't know why you're saying that sounds dumb, since people do that all the time.

Different sound chips, memory lay out... What your talking about is swapping the music between ROM's for the same system I assure you.

Edit: I did some digging around, the closest thing I was able to find was some patches for FF on the GBA, they didn't just use the music from the SNES version they completely rewrote it for the abilities of the GBA the difference in that situation and this one is that the music is the same with only the quality being different. No amount of ROM hacking alone is going to fix that.

Edit 2: To put it bluntly you would go through a ton of effort to recreate what Rare or Nintendo did on the GBA originally and wind up with exactly the same results.... This is why it sounded stupid.

You can't just swap out a music from one game into another just like that. You have to know how to program. The GBA and Snes aren't even remotely close in terms of architecture, to attempt to swap music from an Snes to a GBA would be one helluva task. You need to know how the games' code is written, how it's executed. You would have to know how the Snes and GBA CPUs are set up. Finding the offsets and the pointers that tell the game where the music data is stored. what byte values do what and so on.

Well, if you're so clever you can probably figure it out.
